Bed setup L300 - a little different ! UPDATED !

Post by Albert_N »

Hi,
below are pictures of the bed setup in my van. It is designed to hold 2 pax of medium posture ;) and allows to keep a lot of space in the back. It is fully reversible and does not require any special mods to the interior other than removing 3rd row seat.
1. "soft" luggage is placed between the middle and front seats . From under the middle bench I pull out a "custom- made" piece of wood board to fit on the seat and centre isle ( how do you call this thing behind front seats anyway ? )

2. This is how it looks :

3. Lay flat middle seat. Jump seat remains folded. I put a flat box under the seat for extra support. Remove headrests ( they can stay, but then they raise up one end of the mattrace )
Image
4. Inflate a nice comfy airbed ( double twin size, 100 cm wide ) and put on top :
Image
5. slide the curtains and go to sleep :)
Image
you can see a doble voltage fridge ( 220/12 ) and an air heater ( 220 ) - it was pretty cold at the sea side this spring !
There is pleanty of room around the bed to walk, change clothes, eat etc. if the weather is bad.
When the seat is up and frigde moved to the side 2 bikes can be accomodated inside :

The setup worked nice and my wife accepted it , phew ;)

Comments welcome !

thanks guys ! My wife was happy too with the bed and interior arrangement so the trip went fine ;)
I will be working on some other items inside but I use the van as a city car too and need the space for people inside so I want it fully reversible and as simple as possible.
Cheers,
Albert

OK, here are some pics of continuation of my setup of the van :
cooler, jerry cans for water and fuel, tools ( below the "shelf" thing ). Space on the right accomodates 2 bicycles.
Image
Setup for sleeping- middle seat flat, additional wooden part added, cases flat under the seat and some moved to the back. Air bed not on photo.

My Wife's favourite addition- accomodates all the "useful handy neccessary" things ;)

We will test the setup on our trip to Cornwall, UK this summer. Bikes go with us ofcourse !

Well done!

The interior of your van is a bit different than ours but love how all has its place.
By the way, I'll be visiting Poland in a month or so for a couple weeks. We'll be staying in Zakopane but will most likely visit your city as well. Might try to get in touch then...

Looks nice, but one thing that isn't obvious: how secure is everything in case of an accident? If you have an accident with a 10g deceleration, that 20 litre water jug "weighs" 200 kg. How strong are your straps and attachment points? The bungee cord certainly won't hold.

Just something to keep in mind.

I had an accident years ago; I was hit on the left front, my car did an instant 90 degree right turn. The canoe on the roof only moved about 4 cm, and that because the rack bent. But the ropes at the front and back going from the bow and stern to the bumpers kept it from moving any further. Could have easily turned out differently.

How do you get the middle seat to fold flat? I've never found a way to get mine to do that.

Are there two different kinds of middle seat? Mine faces forward/backwards by flipping the back -- it'll do that fine, but does it also lay flat like yours?

I've got the jump seat on the side, same as yours.

Thanks,

- Morgan

The middle bench seat folds flat. Well, pretty flat. The lever is just in there by the fold up jump seat.

The answer to the seat folding flat is really another question, "So you haven't found that extra lever yet then?"

In the case of the "B" configuration seating arrangement (the bench seat layout), of which I have, there are two levers in under the jump seat: One is the typical lever (like any other vehicle) that reclines the back support, all the way to horizontal as Konadog has noted, and this is found right where the back support hinges to the seat. The second lever is located close to the deck ~ it governs the orientation of the back support, that is whether the seat is facing forward or aftward. You may have noticed that the seat has two sets of seat belts, one set on each side ~ this is why.
