battery discharging L300 1992

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

battery discharging L300 1992

Post by ondro »

hello,
I have problem with battery discharging in my L300 2WD(4g63, prod.year:1992) I`m trying to repair it, but I really don`t know wrhere should be a problem. When engine is running and battery is connected there is no more than 11.27 V in the circuit. If I disconnect battery during engine running, there is 14.46 V in the circuit like usual and it seems to be no problem with charging. I checked out all fuses, possible short circuits and charging indicator lamp function, but everything seems to be OK. It`s alternator maybe, but I don`t want to bring another one because i haven`t it yet and in SLOVAKIA there are no many L300 vehicles (to bring some parts from them)

Can somebody give me some advice or experience where should be a problem or how to repair it?

Many thanks for any advice.

It looks like you may have a bad battery. They will behave like this when the are on there way out.
Sometimes the plates will short internally in the battery. Do you have a way of charging your battery besides your Delica? If so, charge it and then monitor the voltage but do this while it is out of the vehicle or disconnected from it. After charging for a bit, remove the charger and monitor voltage on the battery itself, if it's bad, you'll probably see voltage drop fairly quickly and steadily.
If the plates are shorting internally, it may not show this right away or all the time.
Another quick way to check is if you have a known good spare battery, you can put that in and try it.

A bad alternator could cause this issue, with no battery it puts out enough voltage to keep the numbers up, but there's not enough current to charge the battery so the extra load causes the voltage to fall... check that your belts are tight, but beyond that I'd suspect an alternator issue more so than a battery one.

I think it is not a bad battery, because I replaced it two times and it discharged everyone.
Yesterday, I took alternator out of my delicia, because everything related with it was OK, so I suspect that the problem causes alternator. (Today morning, I asked about price, a man which sells an old autoparts from wrecks. He told me 50 EUR. It`s funny, because I bought my delicia 3 months ago for 150 EUR :-D ). So I`ll see what should be better to do: repair an old one, or buy an old one?
Nevertheless, thanks for advices!

no , WHY? It`s 2WD 4g63, Minibus (for 9 persons) model 1992. Is it too much for this car or what? I`m from Slovakia so I really don`t know nothing about prices in Canada.
In our country so old car is really wreck. Mine has 275 000 km. But I love driving it, and I`m trying to find some Delicia 4x4 but newer one (I`d p.year 1995).
I`ll make some photos and stick them on my profile later.

A Delica in good shape costs from 5000 to 6.500 Euro in Canada 8-)

DO NOT disconnect your battery with the engine running!! This is death to an alternator with an IC regulator.

Get your charging system and battery tested by a shop that has the proper equipment to do a charging system analysis.

You may have a diode or regulator problem, it could also be caused by worn out brushes, bad battery/alternator/ground connections.

Thanks, SO now I`ll be sure that my old alternator is death, maybe it was before. :-)
I also fought, that worn out brushes,diode/regulator problem caused that,... besause in another cars I was changing those parts many times, but this mitsubichi alternator had all those parts built in an alternator housing, so I haven`t seen nothing to change there. Part instead of part construction I think.

About price..... I find mitsubishi L300 4x4 for sale, with the highest price in all over the Slovakia. Hence

http://mitsubishi-l-300-bus.autobazar.e ... 73187.html

and the cheapest one L300 4x4 in Slovakia (it was total wreck with current evidence papers and licence number plates)

http://www.autobazar.eu/sk/mitsubishi-l ... 47006.html

I avow that I bought my l300 for a good price but it is 2WD.
