Hello, is your vehicle coming in a Container or RoRo, that will tell you about alot of Fee's right off the bat , Container is ALOT more expensive once you pay your de-stuffing fees, but you get your vehicle up to 3 weeks faster.
So where are you along your importing journey?

^Noel's got you there, but also, are you going with a broker, I've brought in a number of cars and have found living on the island is too nice to leave, and when all is said and done, it's nice to just show up and snag your mobile and take off, as opposed to having to make 1-2 trips depending on the shipping schedule and working around customs and their silly hours.

As for RORO, the next boat leaves on the 22nd of May, with an approx ETA of June 7th

I can't remember the exact costs of things but here goes.

-Shipping, bought and paid for I assume
-Customs, pay A/C tax $100 and GST, depends on value of car (try and get them to invoice only the cost of the car to save some dough[ minus fees like Bio Wash or things of that nature])
-Pay Wharves (Be prepared to argue with them about "no start" fees, since some cokehead longshoremen apparently don't understand you have to warm glow plugs for diesels.)
-Bring it home, install compliance gear (reflectors/markers and DRL)
-Take it to inspection facility, cost varies, but a flying colours pass should really be no more than 125-140$
-And finally register, you pay PST, registration costs and obviously your insurance as well.

I used to use a broker, but caught 2 brokers just bald face lyeing to me. so i thought, how hard can it be..... so once your paperwork shows up, Call CBSA and they will fax you a form for applying for soil inspection, fill it out and send it in with all the information, you will need some info depending on if your coming in roro or container, personally I wont do roro
there used to be video on Utube about it, but its been removed, you used to be able to stand at the fence and watch the unloaders doing do-nuts and burn outs in the fast cars, and just over reving all used cars and truck, not shifting gears TRASHING your ride I used them ONCE.... That was more than enough for me
if you use a container, once your container is shipped to the destuffing warehouse, and your soil inspection has been faxed back to you with the release stamp, you can just go to Customs downtown vancouver and pay your taxes and fees, get on a bus or skytrain to richmond , pay your destuffing randsome, I recomend going with a prostetic to offer, as I have almost lost an entire arm from the costs, can be $450+ just to take your container to the warehouse, open the door, un strap it and back it out.
then drive around the corner to superstore and buy some diesel as your tank is EMPTY, or I take a few literes of Bio diesel with me, that gets me home to the island.

This saves me Broker fees, and for some reason when i have used a broker It takes over a week for them to sort things out. I normally get my vehicles with in 2-4 buisiness days from the day it gets here doing it on my own.
It sounds complicated, but really is not hard at all, this way I get my vehicle quickly and save lots of money.
so once the container ship gets here im in my vehicle with in a week , on RORO, once the ship gets here, you can wait up to 3 weeks for them to get the paperwork done and ready for you, that plus the crazy long walk around the compound and then BACK to the entrance where you car gets moved to........ Sigh...... I guess Im just not that patient . your contacting agent who works for the shipping company will call you a couple days befor your container gets in, your paperwork should allready be sent to your home from japan.
Its easier than trying to return something to most department stores.

Since your in Ontario, its prolly going to be way easyer to get a Broker to do it for you..

Unless you coming out this way, and staying here for a bit, and drive your Van back..

I helped make some simple walk throughs

6.1% - Duty
5% - GST
$105 - Dock Fee's (If RO/RO)
$450 - Container moving and unloading fees (If Container)

Bought a 1991 Pajero on ebay from JDM wholesale in BC. Got the vehicle and all shipped to Ontario. But the vehicle came with no ownership. Have been trying for two years now to get the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario to grant me an ownership for it. I have documents coming out my butt...but they still won't give me an ownership. JDM has since went bankraupt and fled to New Zealand and now I can't get the final document I need to get an ownership. My advice is get a broker first!! Now I have a lovely lawn ornament that looks like a new car!!!

that sucks, a lot of people got screwed by them, have you contacted the agency that deals with auto dealer in BC? They helped some people out but I think that might have been before they skipped town. As for the ownership, I was given a motorcycle once that have no ownership (my uncle found it left in a house he had been renting out) all I needed was a signed and notarized letter from my uncle about how he come to have the bike. I suppose that worked because it had been registered in Ontario before so they could search the vin to see if it was reported stolen. I don't suppose there is a way to get what ever agency in Japan does that stuff to do a search that it hasn't been reported stolen?

Actually with the original vin you can hire agents in japanto try and get another copy of the de- reg paperwork , 2 years might be to long but I know it can be done , I found out the hard way about replacing original paperwork from japan... Not easy but also not impossible.

The biggest fees are the unexpected ones such as storage or exams.

Also, I WOULDN'T suggest driving a freshly imported vehicle across the city, let alone across the country. Should be checked out and serviced by a mechanic. 3 major things to watch out for are the brakes, cooling system and tires.

Exactly what paperwork do you have?
that sucks, a lot of people got screwed by them,
correction: a lot of people got screwed by the government agency that shut them down. I have still seen no indication that JDM wholesale themselves did anything at all wrong until they were shut down.

How about them not sending rockinfarmboy the ownership for a vehicle they sold him? I would say thats a big wrong that screwed him.

Why don't you just buy a wrecked Pajero or Montero ? That would solve your vin issues.

As for the original poster, take the advice of the importers here. They've done it many times.

Your biggest expense will be mechanical repairs and compliance costs.

Import fees/taxes, etc.. are all fixed.

What is not fixed is if you need brakes, tires, headlights, suspension work, etc... Just to pass government inspection.

If you don't pass, you don't drive.

Depending on the vehicle, what needs to be done and who is performing the repairs, you can easily be in the 2-3+ thousands to have it pass and roadworthy.
