Wife is nervous to get one

Post by mazdaspeedsteve »

We like the way Delicas look. We like the roominess and cool roof windows. I love that they have off road capabilities. But my wife is nervous about purchasing a fifteen year old vehicle that isn't from around here. Do they break down much? Are they expensive to repair? Do you have to mechanically inclined to own one. Are parts hard to come by? She wants a honda odyssey. I just want a new van. We just want peace of mind.

Get the Odyssey, enjoy being broke from such an expensive vehicle and also enjoy knowing your wife couldn't blame you if something goes wrong.

I have 2, one for me and also bought one for my wife who's loving it more as she puts the km down. Pretty reliable truck if you get them properly and fully serviced before driving them. Parts are quite easy in Vancouver/ Isl. area and work on those turns out to be similar to any vehicle. I think they are way better than most 15yrs old vehicle you'd be likely to find around. No complains with mine and I've put it through hard work. 8-)

Would I buy an Odyssey? Nope and I know my 2 young kids will grow to love them as much as we do.

Hey, I'm a little nervous too .....

but I took the plunge and bought a Delica last week! I had a 2000 Ody, drove it for 6 years and have no regrets. The Honda is no Delica though! The Delica is more like a jeep with room and character to spare. You should make sure the wife and yourself take a test drive to compare what you're looking at, because on the road the Honda vs. the Delica are pretty much polar in personality.

I've got the "new to me" Delica in at CCautos as we speak ..... I figure if you do the preventive maintenance and are meticulous about keeping a sharp lookout for potential problems with the Delica it will treat you well. That being said, I don't think you can buy a fifteen year old vehicle and expect total "peace of mind", the upkeep is going to be somewhat expensive due to age, and I'm prepared to have some inevitable problems with it at some point. The Honda should run like a charm with just the scheduled maintenance. In the six years I had the Ody the only problem I ever had was a faulty transmission. I was never left stranded, it just started making some strange shifts and noises ...... Honda replaced the transmission under warranty, no charge.

Where are you located? Excellent service for the Delica seems to be available on Vancouver Island and Lower mainland BC, and also in Calgary .... but outside of these areas you could be required to get your hands dirty.

Ps. your moniker speaks of MazdaSpeed ...... the other vehicle in my driveway is an 04 Mazdaspeed Miata ...... love it too!

Hi Steve,

If you are near Burnaby, your wife and I will go a drive in MY Delica (hard to get Jay to remember that it is ME who owns it, he loves it more than his chevy, and jumps into the Delica driving seat before I can). I calmly teach woman everything to make her comfy with the Delica.

The ultimate goal is that when husband annoys the wife, then wife drops him on some old 4x4 road, with confidence to happily drive the Delica home and perform routine diagnostics and maintenance... no more fighting over the drivers seat.

Serious offer, Missy learnt from me, now she's off to the Yukon to try it out.

Cheers, Christine.

Let Christine take your wife out for a drive! :-D My wife had the same concerns about purchasing and driving. Christine took her out for a quick spin. When she came back we put a deposit down with Mardy. We will be picking it up next week.

Thanks Christine

Okay, we'd better stop all this, she won't be able to get in her Deli with her ego swelled too much!
