Tip of an iceberg? or a random case of negligence in preventive maintenance....It's too early to say ...but we've recently encountered a 1994 Mitsubishi Pajero with the new 2800 - 4M40 engine.
Customer complains of excessive oil consumption (he has added about 8 liters of oil within 5,000 kms)
Visual Diagnostics - No visible oil leaks, some blue smoke off the exhaust on acceleration.
Previously in Manila, earlier models have had some problems with oil getting thru the valve cover breather and into the intake hose. This passes thru the turbo inlet and eventually gets burned in combustion and out the exhaust. Thus leading to excessive oil consumption.
Another issue was with the cylinders and piston rings wearing out excessively than normal causing oil to burn out as well.
We will keep updating this posting if we still encounter similar problems and other issues concerning the newer models using the same 4M40 engine (Mitsubishi Pajero 2800 & L400 Delica Spacegear).

Just so we know for group Delica Camping 4x4 weekends, what is reasonable oil use for an L400, and is there anything special to watch for on them compared to our beloved L300's? Is there only 1 oil stick to check, and what about tranny fluid checking?
I know L400's have the oil dipstick in such a really weird place, who would think to look in the front engine bay for an oil dipstick, versus under the passenger seats which works just fine for L300's cuz I don't have to stand outside in the rain to check it.

Could it be the oil seals in the turbo itself? when there is the lowest airflow to help hide it. Not the same thing but I remember Detroit 2stroke Diesels were famous for blower
seals eating engine oil.
