HELP!!! No power and stalling

Post by steelyz »

Hi was hoping someone knows whats wrong with my Delica. It was making a rattling/grinding noise under drivers side for a few weeks now but only when I was highway driving at around 80km. Today going on the upper levels I lost all power and it stalled. I put it in neutral and it started up fine. Next hill I went up it started stuttering and no power so I pushed on the gas pedal and it revved up. On my way to Squamish it had no power at all. Kept loosing power. And I didnt notice the grinding anymore. Also I tryed to set the alarm when I got home and it wont work now. Could it be my turbo? Any advice with be greatly appreciated. I dont know where to start. Thanks

Did it smell really bad and was there a lot of smoke coming out of your rear end (er, I mean your Delica...)? If so, your turbo could have detonated. The loss of power suggests this may be the case - when mine blew to the moon, I did not stall out, but there was a considerable amount of blue/grey smoke with the smell of burning oil and no power. However, prior to my turbo being replaced, I wasn't hearing a rattle - sounded more like a dragging chain, if this is what you have been hearing, then again, the turbo is a good candidate. Sounds like a case for a qualified mechanic...

Good luck.

A dragging chain is great way to explain it. Yes and second time it happened I did notice a lot of blue smoke out of the DELICA lol. I could smell something yesterday but very little today. Can you rebuild a turbo or is it dead?

By the sounds of it you will likely need to replace your turbo with a good used one or a brand new one. Rebuilding may be an option, but from the conversations I have had, it really isn't the best approach. Given your predicament (which sounds like a blown turbo), there may not be anything left to rebuild.

Have a mechanic check out your timing belt and your crankshaft pulley. If either goes, then you need a new engine. That's worst case scenario but not one to overlook.

When my crankshaft pulley was on it's way out it made a chain-like grinding noise. Had my friend not told me (I couldn't hear it inside) then I would have been shopping for a new engine.

Check your balancer belt, it might have jumped and ruin the fuel pump timing. it is not turbo for sure.

Not to highjack this thread, but I've had very similar issues recently, lots more smoke, way less power, chain dragging only briefly, but when I'm revving higher, I get a loud whistle(on the verge of squeal). I was worried about a pully seizing up, but I'm not sure how to isolate it. IT usually is worst right after start-up, and dissapears once the engine is warmer. My other concern was that it was my turbo. There has been a slow oil leak under the area of the turbo for awhile. Can the turbo disconnected/reconnected easily???? I will have a hard time finding a mechanic willing to do that for me here. If I were to disconnect the turbo, could I still drive around? Sorry I'm not helping with this thread, only distracting, I just felt that they were the same issues.

Without a turbo you can drive, but really, really slowly. I am not sure about the ability to connect/disconnect a turbo - perhaps someone else can chime in here. I have my doubts. It sounds like your turbo is on its way to detonation - that squeal sound you mention was the first indication to me that something was wrong.
