Incorrect Temperature Reading on "Delica Thermometer"

Hi everyone,

My Delica-Thermometer (the only really useful gauge in the 3-instrument pod) is acting up.

While the outside temperature is constantly quoted at +26 degrees, the inside temperature is constantly indicated at -26 degrees...

When the picture below was taken, it should have been about +18 inside and outside as it was in the evening and the interior of the van obviously will (eventually) assume the same ambient temperature as the outside.

Any help or suggestions?

PS: I tried the "search" but could not find anything useful (maybe I gave up too quick) - apart from one of my own old posts I found tons of stuff on EGT gauges and fuel temp-gauges... but nothing on the inside/outside thermometer... sorry...

Haha, I thought I was the only one... my outside reads properly, but the inside always reads -26.

If you look below your steering wheel on the plastic roughly where your knees would be,theres a small
1cmX1cm metal plate clipped on. This is the Thermistor that registers the Internal temperature.
When mine went I unclipped the metal plate, scraped off the glue substance that was holding the old
thermistor in place, snipped off the old thermistor from the wires, soldered on a new one from Radio Shack
(dunno if you have in Canada..) using heat shrink and then Glued it onto the metal plate and clipped back in..

I did check that there was no loose connections 1st tough using a multimeter.
in 99% of cases -26 is screwed thermistor.

A common problem. Most of the busted thermometer I have seen in a Delica were around -27. Don't know way.
A new thermostat usually fix the problem.

You didn't mention whether the A/C was on or not....

Okay, but seriously, I agree with the others, change the thermistor and that should fix the reading.

I guess -26 is absolute zero to a delica. Glad to get the possible radio scrap replacement lead. Mine was hanging off the steering wheel column by the wires for a while, and every time I noticed it I knew I should tape it back in place before it ripped it off climbing in and out - and I think it's probably obvious how that ended up.

Yup, dead thermistor, on the steering column right by your knees. NASA would call this situation "off-scale low".

I guess Mitsubishi figured once it's colder than -26, it doesn't matter how much colder it is.

Mitsubishi also charge a small fortune for a direct Mitsi replacement.

I guess Mitsubishi engineers have never lived in Canada...

Okay, now that we have inside figured out, where is the thermistor for the outside temp? I would assume that the same issue applies. Or is it a cut wire, and an open circuit registers as +26?

The outside temp sensor is located behind the front bumper. Mine had a loose connection and readings were -30C all the time; Glen fixed it.

Can you be more precise about the location? I've often wondered where the air intake for the ventilation system is, and where the temp sensor is. I certainly notice that when I park, the outside temp climbs rapidly, implying that the engine heat reaches it.
