People who own Delicas are a better breed

Post by Arnold6019 »

My main vehicle is a lifted Delica high roof. Also have a restored S-Cargo. Both vehicles are fun to drive and real conversation pieces. Love talking to the folks with questions and other Delica drivers. I also have a completely restored Mercedes Unimog. I would like to see if other Off-road enthusiasts have noticed how the Delica people are kind, gentle and open minded. Many of the Unimog people I hate to say are defensive, close-minded and almost have a cult-like worship of an inanimate object. For example...I just attended a Mogfest and there were signs all over warning that the police would be called in the event of problems. Would this be necessary at a gathering of Delica folks? And this time and the last time it was necessary to restrain someone. I like to people watch and try to understand how humanity ticks. This whole Unimog crowd with it's attitude and chip-on-the-shoulder mentality has me baffled.

It's the groovy little Hippy bus crew just surfin and boppin through life compared to the unstoppable giant war machine who will never be outdone with their superior machines ! (cue evil laughter, and try to imagine it being said with a bad German accent)

Did some more thinking about the Mog vs Delica mentality. Feel just a little bad painting all Mog owners as being arrogant. Not true, as with any group there are many exceptions. The problem I see is that the "good guys" are afraid to take a stand against the "know-it-all blowhards". One time when I undertook this project and talked about it on the Mog website I was laughed at and criticized big time for (a) having the audacity to refer to the 406 as a "pickup". Well it has 4 wheels, a box on the back and is about as long as a normal pickup so what is it then? (b) "Pimping" a Mog. To have a Mog that is not all rusty and beat-up is considered by many to be a sacrilege. Restoring a 55 Chevy or an old aircraft is cool but very uncool to have a "tricked-up Unimog." If I went on the Delica site and referred to my vehicle as a "van" and did some "pimping" with a lift, larger wheels can you imagine even one Delica owner with objections? The sad truth that the Mog people seem to be hiding is that they spend most of their time working on these vehicles and very little time actually driving them. I love the Mog but you freeze your ass in the winter and are barbequed in it in the summer. It is so noisy you have to wear hearing protection. Top speed 52 mph but you have to keep it at about 45 to conserve fuel. If you have to fjord about 4 feet of muck give me the Mog but in the real world give me a Delica.

Very interesting viewpoint. It's too bad when purists turn respect for inanimate objects into an intimate piousness. Kinda takes all the fun out of it.

It's a shame attitudes ruin one's enjoyment of one's rides. Mogs are cool and so should be the people who own them... at least one of them IS.

Agreed that Delica people are really nice for the most part... I've only chatted with one or two that had a 'tude about themselves. These ones tend to remain removed from the main community anyway so you never bump into them. The other breed that is wonderful is the people that stop you in a parking lot to quiz you about your ride... I've had several veterans talk to me about Mitsubishi in general and others who want to see under the "hood". All-in-all an excellent bunch of people surround these vehicles.

I wish your Mog crowd could appreciate life more and be more than just self-righteous... after all, MANNERS always has a MAN within (sorry ladies... my feminine or PC references are a little lacking in the morning but you are included in this).

I would go to the Mog crowd and just say "wo, manners are important!" (wo being pronounced whoa). After all wo manners has WOMAN and MAN within!

There, now that we are all included... :-D

Arnold, you live in quesnel then I take it? Or did I just happen to notice you about a year ago one time as we were headed through quesnel on our way to vancouver. I even stopped and took a look at it, it was parked. Otherwise I would have peppered you with questions. Nice, um, "truck"? :o

Yeah...I live in Quesnel...own Granville's Coffee downtown drop in anytime and ask for me....yes the Mog was in Bungcoober a week or so ago. The longer this goes on the worse I feel about this whole Unimog thing. A couple jerks don't mean the whole lot are bad dudes. I have a couple good friends in the Mog crowd. Just generally the Delica drivers are more my type...the Volkswagen Hippy Bus type. But it takes all kinds to make the world go around..... I believe there are just two types of people on earth....those that believe in the "Two type Theory" and those that don't.....Ted

I went to Mog Fest in 06 and although some "Mog snobs" belittled me and my amazing 1967 Hanomag Al 28 4x4 ex German Border Police truck turned into an expedition camper, most welcomed me wtih open arms. No my rig wasn't a Mog but I was was amazed at a couple of guys that kept reminding me of that. I wasn't trying to pass it off as one either, I knew exactly what I owned. BTW nice Unimog that you have there!

I have been a member for quite some time here and as the popularity of the Delica has evolved I actually noticed the tone and atmosphere here has also changed. The more the group grows the more complex it has become. It was a small family and now it seems to be a large family living under one roof so to speak, more squables, more internal fighting. Don't get me wrong, it is still a great site, hell I don't even own a Delica or Pajero anymore and I'm still on here reading.

The larger the crowd and introduce booze and the potential to show your worst side is unlimited it seems. For 40 years Touring Tin has been wreaking chaos at Tunnel Mountain Campground in Banff when they have stayed there. Back in the 80's there was almost a full blown riot. I'm wondering if they could surpass the Mog's noted above for degree of boorishness. Next year maybe we should join them with Delica's.

Man, did I open a can of worms here. Now I have to come to the defense of Moggers. There was no near-riot ever at Mogfest. Every person is different. Moggers just tend to lean more to the "redneck" side of the spectrum than Delica people. But there are a lot of good rednecks. Delica people just seem to be more open-minded and live and let live. Woodstock is Delica...a world champion tractor pull would be Mog. Nothing really wrong with either just that I personally would rather be at Woodstock. Being judgmental is not my style and not a good human quality. Let the Moggers be Moggers and us Delica Hippies be Hippies. If a Delica were in the ditch a Mogger would stop and pull it out. They love that stuff. Peace brother.
