radio stolen -> headlight relay dead?

Post by coaxial »

Hey guys and gals,

Well my number finally came up and my van got broken into. I've lived in vancouver for 3 years so I think one break-in is not bad. My nice pioneer CD/MP3 deck (face was off) is gone along with some tools. Luckily I was smart enough to keep anything really valuable indoors.

Anyway my stereo deck was forcibly removed last night, but I cleaned up the nest of wires to be sure none were touching or contacting ground. While driving the van today suddenly A loud buzzing/squealing noise started and my dash lights went out. Now when I turn the lights off I've got DRL low beams, but no horn, no interior lights at all. When I turn the lights on everything comes on very dim and there is the buzzing noise.

Of course I immediately checked all the wires where the stereo was ripped out and I'm sure none are shorting. I went through every fuse in the main fusebox and they are all good. The buzzing noise seems to be coming from the set of 4 silver parts above the fuse box.. are these relays? flashers? could be something else in that area. Definitely near driver feet/knees.

I spent a while searching here and haven't found any clues. I'm about to go out and take the whole dash out and start poking around with a voltmeter and doing a general cleanup of wires and new stereo install. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas that would help me solve the issue with the lights faster. I'll be checking all the secret fuses near the battery as well.

Thanks for the help as always!

well I found that one of the headlight wires connected to the small fuse block that sits on the + terminal of the battery has melted and disconnected. I can repair that but of course I'd like to find where it shorted, if it did. It does test as being connected to Ground right now, which doesn't seem right. It is the white wire with red stripe coming from the "lights" fuse ontop of the battery. Would it go to a relay from there? I'll start tracing.

There is one line for the radio, I forget which one it is, that keeps the power to the stereo when the vehicle is off. This comes from the same line/fuse as the horn and lights (which is why you can blow your horn and turn on your lights without the key). Investigate that line to make sure it's not shorted to ground.
