POLL : Please Vote !

Post by jessef »

So I'm putting this in the 'general discussion' area where it belongs.

Venting a little bit because I think I'm in the right.

I recently put an ad in the for sale section just like anyone else.

Because I personally know quite a few Delica owners and :M .ca members, we chat and there's some offtopic (non-sale related) banter which I don't object to.

Then I read a post from someone making assumptions on my behalf. I found this post quite impolite in my for sale thread as it was regarding icbc, income tax, etc... which I feel is more appropriate in a private message.

I politely asked this person to edit their post as I found it quite offensive and has no relation to my thread. This person has read my PM, been online and posted since, yet they did not alter their post in my thread.

It remains there for all to see. This post is making assumptions without any knowledge or basis.

I've posted my own opinions on a few threads however I have always contacted the original poster directly via PM.

My suggestion :

Original posters (thread creator) should have the option to delete posts within their thread under the Vehicle Sales forum area so that they can avoid non-topic and offensive chatter within reason.

Off-topic chatter I believe belongs in the General Discussion area which is where this thread is.

I encourage discussion on this topic as it seems more recently in the last few months that the Vehicle Sales forum area has turned into a General Discussion area.

sure, under vehicle sales, i completely understand your frustration. I followed your last vehicle sale post and found that particular response you refer to as, well, ''off-base.'' It definitely belonged in a PM. Not being able to do anything about it would definitely be annoying, but only accentuated by the fact the poster didn't edit it after your request, even though they have been on the forum since.

Here's my concern though: this "original poster privelidge" might creep into general discussion. Can you imagine the effect this might have on some of the more entertaining, popcorn-eating threads we have seen both lately, and in the past? Now i'm no computer techno wiz, but is it even possible to limit thread editing priveledges to o.p.'s only in vehicle sales????

it should be possible....

I know it is possible to limit only the original poster to be able to reply to their own thread in a for sale forum...

deleted that post for you....

I agree. Thanks adrock.

I searched the net and found that it's common practice for thread creators to have control over posts they deem unacceptable in their sale thread only.

that was pretty sad jfarsang :-( .
i would think of that (almost) as harassment, or resentment...
sounds like this individual is jealous of your success.
i 'might' have an idea who this person might be... :?

i hate thread jackers. if someone starts a thread, they should have the power to edit it.
this should be on any thread tho, not just vehicle sales.

Falls within Marks law - Rule 1.1.1 -- Positive Contribution Rule

Passed on to the Moderator forum, it is a good idea Jesse.

Editing of threads should be handled by moderators. I'm afraid that we may be little biased and not see clearly if allowed to edit our own threads regardless of what part of the forum they are in. Better to just ban those that are not making a positive contribution rather than continually trying to edit out their negative posts. Got an issue? Tell papa Mark and he'll take care of it.

Just my two cents.

id say stick to the method of pming the moderators to edit the threats. other wise say in a situation (not referring to jesse, made up scenario) where some one is selling a vehicle and has sold some in the past and the past buyer wants to say," this guy screwed me, dont do it!" they might not be heard.

i like delete only. No edit, and only in the for sale forum.

Even being screwed is subjective, the for sale thread of any specific vehicle is not for other peoples discussions, it is about the vehicle.

However this forum is small enough that these issues will be very rare, and feel free to pm me about anything you may want me to have a look at.... I don't go looking for reports but that little box popping up will make me pay attention. It really shouldn't take that long.

I don't think that it's a good idea to let people edit other people's posts, just because they don't like them, especially in the for sale section (I saw a post on another forum under a "mint" vehicle for sale where someone showed a picture of that same vehicle previously wrapped around a lamp post, this was a great public service, and one the original poster obviously did not want posted! we similarly have the occasional seller who is less than honest, and I think we should be able to post factual information in response (a moderator however should be able to clean up any plain old slander or other junk)
Editing of threads should be handled by moderators
The problem is, we have VERY few moderators for a forum of this size... I've been pushing for more for quite a while now, but it appears to be falling on deaf ears.

I think the moderators we have are doing a good job (those that are actually around) but we need more of them to be able to keep the spam and other offensive posts in check.

I agree that the thread starter should be able to delete only
in the for sale forum. If someone want's to make their own
post about their experiences with someone else then that should
be separate regardless. That or stake out the house and park a
crappy vehicle next to it saying 'also sold by soandso'
;)
But only in the for sale area.

I think the increase of moderators would be a better idea than just giving everyone a badge. Lets face it, some people can't handle power (albiet limited)

Why not make the "Sales" section just that. You post what you have, and when it sells you post it sold or remove the thread. Nobody able to post openly. You have a question, you PM the SELLER. Allow the Seller to "Bump" after 7 days or at least request bump through the moderators.

Ive known Jesse to be a very stand-up guy, with best intentions and the clubs best interest in mind. I can see your thought process on this, but I'm having a problem voting.

on one hand i agree to the idea of seller only posts in his or her for sale thread, however, when someone else posts in it.. its like an automatic bump, which form a marketing perspective is a good thing...
