Hi everyone, here are some questions and comments on oil and filters.

After looking on the various Delica forums in the UK and Australia I am left with the impression that oil is an important subject but I have no firm understandings. Advice seems to be to use oil that is formulated for JDM turbo diesels (no brainer), and cautions against oil for north american diesels (not so easy). They name a few brands caltex, castrol cxj, and pensoil. I have been to NAPA and Canadian Tire and bought Napa high performance 15w-40. It mentions most north american diesel engines (apparently bad), as well as exceeding the new car and light truck warranty of US, Japanese and European manufacturers. API CI-4, CH-4, CF-4, CF/SL. But does not mention turbo diesels. What are you guys using?

I have phoned various importers and garages looking for filters and have got a variety of prices from high to extremely (smoking crack) high.

Tried to get baldwin filters that were suggested in another post but no one had them on hand.

air pa 1667-fn

cross referenced them at napa and bought
oil 1067 for $33.16
air 2222 for $27.53
and was quoted
fuel 3128 for $24.69 but not in stock

one place (I won't mention the name) wanted $55, $55, $75

The air filter worked out, haven't tried the oil filter yet as I am still unsure of the oil I bought, and want to know what others think about the fuel filters they are using.

Hi David, that's close to the same price I pay for Luber-finer filters - LAF222 @ $24 air filter, FP941F fuel filter, LFP805 oil filter. They all fit but I won't be changing the diesel filter to often, only $10 worth of diesel actually goes through it a month (less in the summer of course).8)

So far the oil grade thing certainly seems pretty confusing, I have been using pennzoil synthetic for diesel's, 15w-40(I mean 0w-40). From what I have read it can't hurt, though it has been written many times the synthetics leak's through rings and the level needs to be check more often. This has made me paranoid, and I check at every fill, but the levels are the same at each oil change.

While now you have me more concerned about the oil issue, I was at Wally world to buy the 20l of Pennzoil 0w-40 that I used in the past and they don't carry it anymore. Thinking of buying the Tech2000 premium 15w-40 by the 20 l bucket.

I believe that good filters and regular oil changes are more important then the oil.

I want to know also what everybody else is using too.

I have always run diesels and have also always used the cheapest 15/40 possible. I always seem to get great milage on my vehicles (close to 500,000kms) so I have never been concerned. However I always do regular oil changes (I only change the filter every second change though). I figure I'll treat my Delica the same way.

I asked my friend who has an opinion on everything and he said the best oil is Rotella T. $5.50/l at Shell in Victoria, so didn't go there. I will look at the gallon jugs in the US next time I'm at a truck stop. He is american and said it was cheap there.

I put in the Napa @3.15/l and will change it often. The filter mentioned above fit.

I called Mitsubishi in Vancouver and asked for the parts by number ( I had already asked by model and was told no way) and they said they could get the filters.

cheaper to import a new vehicle every 5000 km.

I made a note of the Luber-finer filters - LAF222 air filter, FP941F fuel filter, LFP805 oil filter. Good to have options when traveling. Who retails them?

Anyone else with other solutions?

Those filter prices sound way out of line. If I understand correctly the 2.5 is also a marine and industrial engine. Fuel and lube oil filters should be had for much less than that. Sounds like there is some gouging going on.
Don't ever tell a parts person what vehicle you have.[especially a dealer] or they will very likely hose you. That is if they don't advise you to indulge in sex and travel

Whatever lube oil filter you use make sure it has a check valve to maintain a head of oil. I won't get my delica untill January but am curious to know, does it have more than one fuel filter/separator. Has anyone installed a Racor separator in thier fuel system?

As far as oil goes, just make sure what you use has an API "C" rating.
This rating means the oil is specially formulated for compression ignition engines. "S" rating is for spark ignition. David's friend is right, Rotella is really good oil.

Multi grade oils are intended for vehicles which endure extreme seasonal variations in temperature. Places like Manitoba [see 40 below].
If you operate your diesel in a climate such as we enjoy here at the coast, you can get away with a good quality strait weight 30.


BC Delica is right about the fact that service is just as important as what oil you use. If you do use a multigrade oil by the time you reach 5,000 km the polymers which give the oil it's operating temperature viscosity will have "sheared" and you will be left with the base stock viscosity, in the case of 15w 30 this is 15 weight oil.


15 weight oil is pretty thin. So don't go longer than 5k between changes.

Japan Auto in Abbotsford has on hand all the Japanese filters for the Delica. Quite resonably priced to I must say. I just did the oil filter, it was the exact same as the one my Delica origionally had and it only cost $35 so that seems comprable.

K&N HP-3001 $17 at Lordco. This is a good quality filter that has an anti drain back valve. Fuel and air filters cross reference to Purolator, Fleetguard, and John Deere. The John Deere website has some excellent info on filtration. Haven't got any prices yet.

Is anyone out there using a racor?

Your prices for filters are way out of whack for me. Cross-reference them over to a common Purolator (never Fram) and save $$. Should be about ~$6 and go with 20L pails of 15w40 Delo-400 from Chevron warehouses/wholesale ($70). Do frequent changes (5000km) and change your inexpensive filter each time and Bob's your uncle for 700,000km. Infact, I've invested in a K&N washable air filter and am currently looking into a reusable oil filter system you wash yourself. There's lots on the internet and they last for about 10,000km.

If somebody manages to cross reference filters to a common and cheap Fram or Purolator, please share. I personally stay away from Fram oil and fuel filters, I worked in a Lab in Calgary where we tested wear metals (in engine oils) for fleet operators and the info always included filter brands. The low down was Fram oil filter are the poorest performing out there, that was then and this is now though.

Did you mean 100 000K for those washable oil filters? From a environmental stand point they sound pretty good.

Purolator fuel filter is #s 60222, air# 42030.

I have not tried any of these yet,so can't say for sure they fit. If the fuel filter is a seprator type with a drain built in, I can't imagine it would retail for much less than $20

the fleet guard air# is AF437

John Deere air# AT20728 Fuel # PMFF5165

I used to work as a mechanic for John Deere and can honestly say thier filtration products and lube oils are as good as any. Thier parts are not cheap, but you get what you pay for. In particular, the air filters on farm equipment are well engineered as they see some pretty rough service.

Donaldson makes a washable air filter also.

If I was needing to service my intake system very often I'd likely install some kind of snorkel

We were able to get all the stuff thru Napa. Ya just got to dig a bit, and they'll have 'em the next day. The $60 dollar thermostat in the real world cost $12. The 3 week $300 rotors are actually from a 89-91 Monterro (calipers and pucks too), and the filters were in stock. Timing and Balance belts are Gates products, I ordered the $108 and $158 tensioners from overseas, had 'em a week later for $61 for the pair. I'll take my old ones to the parts guy for a match up now that we can see what they look like. Our Delica although low km, needed a fair amount of mechanical including the fuel pump. But now that shes done, I feel confident about road trips and back country. Its definitely the second best thing I've ever ridden. I mean driven.

Got any part #s for the belts, tensioners and thermostats which you'd be willing to share?

It's a lot easier than having to match them up after removing them.
