id say stick to the method of pming the moderators to edit the threats. other wise say in a situation (not referring to jesse, made up scenario) where some one is selling a vehicle and has sold some in the past and the past buyer wants to say," this guy screwed me, dont do it!" they might not be heard.

The poll is for DELETING inside your FOR SALE thread only.

Not editing. That is strictly for moderators.

If you take some time and scour the internet, you will find that the majority of classified sections enable to thread author to delete (only) posts within his/her thread.

For this sole reason.

If someone has an issue with the seller, there are many ways to approach it. PM, email the seller directly. Have a moderator involved or create/add onto a topic in the 'off-topic/general discussion' area where 'chatter and talking' is what it's about.

I really feel strongly about a seller having the ability to delete posts including his/hers inside their own for sale thread.

Otherwise the classified/for sale section will just be a run-off of the off-topic area.

Imagine if craigslist was like this forum and anyone could comment. It would be a disaster and shut down quickly.

Comments and talking that are not related to a sale belong outside of the sale ad/thread unless allowed by the author.

I think the moderators do a pretty darn good job on the forum in general and it should stay as it is for deleting/editing posts, however I also think that "sale" ads should have a time limit, say a month, then they get deleted unless the person relists (think UsedVictoria or wherever). You can post your ad, and after a month you get an email that your ad is about to expire unless you renew it.

I agree with the time limit, not enough people actually come back and close an ad after the sale is complete. I do think though that the seller should be able to delete posts in their own sale thread or at least limit posting in that thread to the creator only, if a user has a question they can PM or use whatever other contact info there is in the ad, just like in used......com or craigslist or any other classified ad.

My experience with a local motorcycle forum which has the 7 day bump rule and only allows the seller to post in the for sale section is that it is beneficial because the seller is forced to edit the original post with new information people are asking, and it is clear and to the point, after all we are trying to sell a vehicle here. The issue with this is it may hurt a sale based on someone not wanting to pm or email the seller, the reply button is more simple, however as far as the bumps by posts from other users, if the 7 day rule were to be implemented it would apply to everyone which would make things stay in order which I think is more fair than having other users bump things for you (possibly intentionally)

I still think the best compromise is allowing the seller to delete posts in their thread. If you have an issue post it up in general where it can be discussed in depth and not where someone is trying to sell a vehicle.

I would agree with the more moderators comments - I don't have as much time as I used to 'watch' this forum. I also don't have the ability to deal with spammers in the fashion that Mark (the main moderator) has. And finally, this IS one of the most grown-up-acting-and-typing-like-adults forum I've ever been on - we do a pretty good job of moderating our own words.

You can always edit your own post titles to say SOLD.

The moderators can and will delete other peoples posts if it's requested and considered to be inappropriate or offensive.

You can delete your own posts within your thread, just not the original post/topic and other posts from other members.

not only can you edit the listing to say sold, you are supposed to.

Based on recent feedback from site users, I thought it would be useful to include a couple of pointers on how the Vehicle Listings sections can be more optimally used.

First, please note that posts remain on this forum permanently (unlike other forum websites who "auto-prune" for-sale posts after, say, 3 weeks). Maintaining older listings could have some benefit to folks in the Delica market, who may benefit from info on historical asking prices. What WOULD be useful though is if vendors could modify any expired listings to display a "SOLD" in the title line.

Second, dealers should avoid "top posting" their own listings (i.e., responding to one's own posts to keep the thread current). Oftentimes a dealer post will trigger questions/comments from other site visitors, and when this happens, of course the vendor is encouraged to respond. However, if subtle changes are required, a preferable option would be to modify the original post.

I tend to agree with the idea of allowing deletions, but not editting/mods.

Thread-hijacking is a real pain in the butt, and if someone has a real issue with a thread creator and is getting no joy from PMing them or otherwise contacting them directly - well, one can always start up a new thread of their own if they feel so inclined.

But keeping it all as civil as possible is certainly the way to go. Flame-fests never end well...

PS: Being a forum moderator is a tedious and thankless job IMHO. So as a relative newcomer, a big retroactive thanks to all moderators and active members who keep this forum the great resource that it currently is!

Much as I'm a control freak, I'm voting no. The moderators are there to "moderate" things. So if you have a problem with posts, and a PM doesn't fix it, then asking the moderators to intervene gets another set of eyes on the issue.

I don't like the idea of automatic deleting after a certain time. Because I'd like to be able to look at older posts, sold or not, to get an idea of what sort of prices are being asked or offered.

Why would you vote no ?

It's to delete posts in the For Sale section only within your created thread. That is all.

Go and take a look at what these nice guys (sarcasm) are doing in Mardy's for sale thread :

The guy is selling a vehicle and these guys bombard his thread with off topic discussion.

The original poster (Mardy in this case), should be allowed to delete those posts.


You want moderators to sort out every little post ?

Will one moderator delete a post, yet another moderator would deem it fine ?

Look at all the other forums on the net. 99% of them, thread creators can delete offtopic and unwanted posts within their advertised thread.
