Broken Crank shaft in northern ontario!HELP!

Hey folks,
I'm just north of thunderbay (on my way back to Jasper AB) my 91 Delica Exceed started running extremely rough, found a mechanic and it looks like the crank shaft is broken, the timing seems to be off now, it still runs although its rough. I know what will happen if I keep driving it. So i'm in a motel trying to figure out what to do. Should I try and arrange to get the part and have it shipped here from Vancouver i assume? Or have the Delica shipped by automobile or train to jasper alberta where my deli mechanic can surely fix it. The mechanic that i spoke with here has never seen a Delica before and i'm concerned that it could take a long time to get the part and to fix it. I need to get back to work ASAP.
Any suggestions or experiences with any of these would be much apreciated

Tough call, I personally would put it on the via train , should cost you about $1000, I shipped out an Iltis last year from ontario and it cost me $900 to vancouver but its smaller than the Delica, that would get you back to work so you keep your job, get to a mechanic you trust..... or it could be a easy fix, Pretty tough to diagnose over the web .... I guess it depends on how important getting back to work is, vs hotel bills, and IF you can get it properly repaired where you are

parts are easy, any of the dealers on here can send something couriered overnight, (and pretty much any part you could need I'm sure can be found through one or the other of them)

The trick is the mechanic.... and that is something that we really can't guess for you, you'll have to feel them out yourself, it isn't that complex an engine, and all the engine manuals are available online, the question is whether or not you find a mechanic willing to try "different"

Aww man that sucks - I feel for you.

A broken crankshaft is unfortunately a pretty huge job to fix as I'm sure you know. I personally would be leary of handing such a major job off to someone who I just met.

You're asking for advice - what I think I'd do is get your self a CMA membership, have it trailered back to T.Bay, and put on a train to Edmonton then arrange for another CMA trip from Edmonton, or perhaps arrange a friend and a flatbed from Edmonton to Jasper? I'd also get a quote for getting it shipped by train from ThunderBay to Vancouver and let CVI look after me.

Hi Tyler,

From the way it sounds, it may just be a cam timing issue. Have the mechanic open the top cover of the timing belt and check the cam timing. You may have a broken balancer belt that caused it to jump a tooth. It shouldn't take him over an hour to correct it.

If the crankshaft is broken, there's no way an engine can still run. If your mechanic needs some assistance, feel free to send me a text.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the support. When we took the timing cover off the crank shaft pulley was wobbling around like crazy, so i'm definitely leaning toward a crank shaft problem, either the pulley key thingy, or perhaps the shaft is sheered but still has enough friction to turn. Either way, I really dont have the time or confidence to hang out in Thunder Bay until it gets sorted so i'm looking at renting a uhaul truck with a vehicle tow trailer. If that doesnt work then hopefully i can get it on a train, but I think they need to be able to drive it onto the train. Every time I start it, it sounds worse, so i'm going to try and avoid doing anymore damage, and get it to someone i trust as soon as possible.

yup, sounds sorta like mine... one quick and easy thing to check, how's the bolt that holds the pulley on? it's possible all you need to do is tighten that down (or replace it if it's gone missing) and you'll be good to go.... or it may need a whole new pulley and key... but might as well at least check to see if it's the simple fix before giving up...

Before you start pricing out flatdecking and such.
Have you seriously gone through the yellowpages (yes I know
it's a lot of ads) and called import places?
I have found in our small deli community of Saskatoon
a Euroimport mechanic, 1.5 hr north, another mechanic
from Asia ... all who have actually worked on them.
There has to be someone in your neck of the woods
who can do the work. Start calling and expect to
spend hours. Don't chit chat with mechanics, ask
if they have or have someone working for them
who has actual experience. No, then move to the next.

Update!
at the moment i'm waiting for a tow truck to to the deli to thunder bay, where a mechanic will check the crank pulley and pulley dampener to determine exactly what needs to be done, hopefully its just a loose bolt? If not then ill be calling one of you guys to have a new crank pulley or dampener shipped to thunderbay as fast as possible

Update!
Had a mechanic check out the delica today, crank pulley key way was totally warn. They would have been able to machine a new one but it was so badly damaged they couldnt get accurate measurements. Good news is that CVI is sending me a new crank pulley and it will hopefully be here tomorrow with enough time for them to install it before the shop closes for the weekend.

i have had so many calls about blown motor/engine fail/ cam shaft timing/black smoke, etc nowadays. we haven't got this small japanese diesel engine in North America before, so most diesel mechanics here actually don't know what they are.
in my opinion, do not try any delicate jobs( engine and electric, especially ) on your Delis if you have 1 % uncertainty or you may lose your motor even if you are good backyard mechanics.
keep doing regular maintenance and have some lower mainland delica shops check them out when you have a chance to come to Vancouver.

i am very surprised so many delica engines are abused in Canada, as they have lived longer than expected in Japan.
we spent lots of money to buy Delicas.

Make sure it's a brand new one vs. a used one.

If I recall, the key itself and cut in the pulley are both bang on at 6mm. Used one's can differ 1-3mm which makes all the difference in the world.

I had a used one to replace my toasted one (sounds like yours) and it was off by 3mm with the new key. It was not useable.

I had to get a new crankshaft pulley to match the new key.

A new crank pulley from rockymountainimports comes with a new key as a combo. I think it was between 250-300.

Just a head's up if you end up with two different measurements.
