Search. Where is it. What it does. How to use it.

Post by jessef »

If you look in the upper, right corner of this page you are looking at right this instant, you will notice some little buttons.

One in particular, the 'Search' button, is your best friend.

Go on... he won't bite ... push this button Image

There will be times when you think you are all alone and no one else has experienced your current problem or situation.

Don't fret. We've all been there.

Push this Image button and type your problem, curiosity or question.

99.99999% of the time, you will find results.

Within these results, you will see that others have had the same problem as you and there are fixes and solutions.

You will see that there are others who share your curiosity for Delica's and may come across results that will satisfy your curiosity as it has others in the past.

You will see that your question is more than likely not a unique one and that it has in fact, been asked in the past. To that extent, it has more than likely been answered in an informative manner too !

Fear not my Delica brothers and sisters !

There are others that have gone through what you are going through as you read this !

Use the Image wisely and you may just satisfy your curiosity, problems and questions !

ps. There are many who don't know about or ignore the Image button and ask questions that have been asked and answered tenfold. But don't digress. Once the Image button is your friend, you will find the wealth of information and past discussions very interesting and useful.

And one hint if you don't like the internal search of this forum. Use Google with the search term:

site:delica.ca X

X =search term

Fexlboi's advise is one of the best 'cause the search function on this site isn't that great, you can end up with one full page of results which are all for the same post while the google function works great... Thanks Mister Fexlboi.

You could avoid that if you check at the internal search "Display results as: Topic". Still I prefer the Google way.

Another downside from the internal search is the limitation of characters. For example if you try to find something about EGR you will have no luck with the internal search, but Google gives you the full list of posts.

I included the Google Search in the new design of Delica.ca, I just need a few more not so frickin bussy days at work to finish it.

Oh, always thought it was - wet floor site:delica.ca, which is my prefered method to forum search buttons.

Well, it really doesn't matter as long as "site:delica.ca" without any spaces is in the search form.

one quick note for anyone using the built in search function, it doesn't handle any words shorter than 4 characters, so don't even bother searching for any of the normal acronyms or short words that we use all the time... that would be far too convenient. (originally I had a whole ton of them listed here, but I decided to remove them in case anyone ever fixes the search engine to index 3 letter words, or in case anyone uses google to search the site for any of them)

Search and Community

Post by Mbryant »

I agree we should use the search function to begin our query and the information is very valuable however I appreciate replies to questions because it makes me feel connected to the community of Delica owners. I can only read facts for so long before my brain shuts down but if someone answers my post then I know there are other owners/drivers out there.

Plus for me living in Ontario I have not had the chance to even see another Delica up close let along interact with another driver/owner in person. Which means I read the forum daily and will consider posting just to make a connection with someone else.

As a new (two month) owner of a Delica I am still not even sure what questions to ask or what to search for and I have appreciated the patience and friendliness of people replying to me. For example what are the bars called on the front of my Delica? Are they sway bars, bull bars, bush bars or roo bars?

In the past I was a member of a VW Westfalia on line forum but it was so rule bound and militant that I was afraid to post for fear of messing up the system or asking the wrong question.

I love this forum and its relaxed atmosphere.

I have really appreciated the Delica Wiki perhaps we could include a section of FAQ's for new buyers, prospective buyers, and a "so compliance is done but now what?" Also the excellent information in this thread about searching and using Google could be a sticky for newbies like me.

Please understand I mean no disrespect I just wanted us to consider the value of questions, responses and community. (Which again I think is excellent on this forum)

Thanks Jessie for the "Search" tips. I've been using just the Delica.ca search until the Goggle info ( "site:delica.ca" ) came up. Now I can search for 3 letter words. It's great!! Now I can find even more great info.

We actually have an FAQ section, but it was last updated in July 2008. There are at least five FAQs that should be there but aren't:

How do I start the engine in cold weather?
How do I use 4WD?
How I replace the headlight bulbs?
Do I need fuel additives?
What size tires does my van take?

"My feet are wet!" is already there.

Do I need fuel additives?
FAQs are only useful if there's and Frequent Answer to go along with it... I'm afraid that one has an awful lot of differing opinions...

This thread should be sticky! It increases people's likelihood of using the search function. :)

(While it may not look like I search before I post, I am a UNIX admin, so I am used to RTFM! ;))

I would agree with everyone else here, the "site:delica.ca:" is a far better way to search than the internal forum search function. It could be placed in a link on the site as well by an administrator.

Here is a phenomenal resource for googling just about anything:

Nothing like touching up on one's google fu!

Too true. :-)

This forum is not alone: every internet forum I've ever seen seems to be write-only, and nobody ever reads or searches past postings. I read just about every posting of every thread before I even signed up, but this was a much smaller web site at the time.
