Re: Old member, tough decisions - comparion between L300 & L400
I don't know if you guys know the various codes to help in searching for Delicas (L400s). If you are after the twin opening sunroof type , that sort of sun roof is only an option on the low roof versions and they are PD8w (SWB + low roof). The 8 represents the 2.8 . A "6" in the number represents the V6 3000cc petrol engine so a PD6w is a low roof petrol. A High roof diesel is PE8W petrol PE6W. The high roof is 70ml taller by the way. The LWBs are all PF. So PF8w and PF6w. There is no such thing as a low roof LWB. Almost all LWB are 7 seaters but they do make 8 seaters but not in Supers or Royals. These numbers are always in the VIN/chassis number. We have to be careful in Oz cause dealers often try to sell cars as LWBs which are SWBs. I suspect it is just ignorance. Cheers..

I know the exact model I'm looking for.
It's called the Exceed 1 Twin sun roof model. The chassis number is KD-PD8W-NSEGF1.

Is that just because of the caperization? or did you find that the L300 was nicer than the L400 for this in some other way?Out of all three, I preferred the L300 poptop 'Turtle' for long distance camping. But that's me. Maryna likes the L400 LWB but also Turtle.

The Poptop made all the difference in the world when we pulled into a place to rest.
I like the cab over and for some reason Turtle is very peppy off the line and solid on the highway.

Ya, having gone from a '76 Westy to the Delica, no pop-top is the one thing I really miss when camping. We didn't necessarily use the roomier "upstairs bedroom" that often but it was just great to be able to stand-up and, especially, as a place to toss lots of stuff out of the way to keep the sleeping area tidy. Also was a nice breeze-way to hang clothes etc. It's a shame more Delica's didn't get that conversion. BTW - has anyone seen a L400 with a pop-top?jfarsang wrote:The Poptop made all the difference in the world when we pulled into a place to rest.

..a couple of things NEVER missed about my VW westies was: sleeping up top when it was windy...cooler in the fall/spring than my Delica, but most importantly I will never miss the drafty-wind howl created from the aging pop-top seals while driving at top speed.(about 70km if I remember...lol!)
What I miss most was the great access to the rear passenger area...this is the reason I still own/drive a syncro Doka.

I'm going to take it off before I dive into the engine bay and do my stuff. It's huge.

I can see it getting in the way a bit when getting under the hood, could also make a nice place to sit when looking under the hood when your out in the wilderness :)

it will be interesting to see what the power feels like with a 4D56 in a L400....
