Re: Hard wired backup camera system
Has anyone gone ahead and put a forward-looking camera on the left mirror? I don't yet have my Delica, but this is exactly what I thought of after having trouble turning left in my LHD 4Runner in downtown Victoria. I know it would be worse in a Delica RHD! :p Never mind the advantages for passing etc.

Re: Hard wired backup camera system
Very impressive install! Especially for an "electrically challenged" guy like me.
I realize that the view, with the camera, is quite comprehensive but do you find it more useful than the view from the 6X9 convex mirror? I found that once I got used to the mirror, I could judge to within a few inches of objects behind the van. Of course the mirror/window are subject to road grime but so is the camera lens.
Please don't get me wrong; I think a camera would be nice and you did a great job. Just wondering what your thoughts were on the "usefulness" (for lack of a better term).

Re: Hard wired backup camera system
The big reason I'm thinking of switching from the mirror to a camera is because my rear window is tinted, the mirror worked great on my L300 with a clear window, but with the tint on my L400 (and it's not really that dark a tint either) it's very difficult to see, especially at night... though I may just add some lights instead, we'll see...I realize that the view, with the camera, is quite comprehensive but do you find it more useful than the view from the 6X9 convex mirror? I've found that (and maybe it's just the camera I ended up with) if you rely exclusively on the camera, you'll find yourself in the weeds! As a result, I use the camera as reference to see what's behind me, but I still use my mirrors. The camera does have some night vision, and is ringed by IR lamps, so it is handy at nighttime.Green1 wrote:The big reason I'm thinking of switching from the mirror to a camera is because my rear window is tinted, the mirror worked great on my L300 with a clear window, but with the tint on my L400 (and it's not really that dark a tint either) it's very difficult to see, especially at night... though I may just add some lights instead, we'll see...I realize that the view, with the camera, is quite comprehensive but do you find it more useful than the view from the 6X9 convex mirror? Re: Hard wired backup camera system
I think it will also depend on where you mount the camera, I was thinking up where the original mirror had been... (and yes, I would never advocate backing up soley based on the camera view, you really need to use ALL available methods of seeing where you are going...)delica 304 wrote:I've found that (and maybe it's just the camera I ended up with) if you rely exclusively on the camera, you'll find yourself in the weeds! Re: Hard wired backup camera system
I have one on my GMC van its mounted on the roof edge and aimed down so i can see my trailer hitch . Since its aimed done like that i have a better perspective of distance between the trailer ball and the trailer hitch.

Re: Hard wired backup camera system
I always wondered how those cameras work when covered with mud and salt from
the highways. I can see if it was mounted behind the rear glass (inside) and the
wipers cleared the stuff away.
