Vin Numbers..?

Post by wilderness »

G'day,

I am in Oz and am looking at purchasing a 1984 L300. 4*4

I am trying to decode the Vin Number...but when I try to enter it into one of the decoding programs on the net
it wont compute, stating there must be 17 characters for vehicles manufactured after 1980.

Mine only has 16 characters.... SC5Z35PK04000400. I see a L300 on ebay here that only has 15 characters...????

Is there anyone with a L300 of this vintage who can advise me as to whether they in fact do a have a vin number
with 17 characters..??
...and could you list them for me so maybe I can figure which character is missing..!!

thanks

Ian

they do not have a 17 digit VIN.

As for decoding, there is very limited information in the VIN itself, most of the information is only in the chassis number (and if you don't have the vehicle in front of you, you won't have access to the chassis number, and if you do have the vehicle, you probably don't need it)

The VIN will tell you the basics only, diesel or gas, low or high roof, 2 or 4 wheel drive... not much more. (the first 4 characters of the VIN are the only ones with any real information in them)

G'day Green1,...thanks for taking the time to reply...unusual that they don't have the regulation 17 characters to say the least...

..where is the chassis Number located, as I would like to check this before I purchase the vehicle?

cheers

unusual that they don't have the regulation 17 characters
unusual? not really... the "regulation" was American and spread to many other places... Japan certainly didn't have that regulation 15 years ago, and I don't know if they do even today.

The vin decoder will never work with any information you can find on the delica.
the vin number will give you very little information of any sort
the model code will help, but if you had access to it, you wouldn't need it because you'd have the vehicle in front of you!

Of course the other issue is that you are looking at a 1984? the only model info I have is for 1989 onward...

sorry, not trying to be difficult, I'm just not sure how much help we can be.

What sort of information are you looking for about this vehicle?
and what information do you have available to you?

Greeno....not at all..appreciate the input..

..things like engine type ( single or double overhead cam ? )and size, ( the engine No. is 4G62BY6297 )
...gearbox type, where made ( i.e. is it an import ?)
date of manufacture ,

..just wanting to establish if it is stock standard or has it been fiddled with mechanically...

..and the more greenies the better...I reckon

thanks

4G62 is a petrol engine, 1.8L 16 valve dual overhead cam

Beyond that, I can't make heads nor tails of that engine number, nor the vin... they aren't much like the 1989 and later ones that I've ever seen...

as for date of manufacture, they don't seem to like to give that out... the easiest way generally is to look at the tag sewn in to the seatbelts, the date on those should be within a month or 2 of the manufacture date for the vehicle.

Ok ..thanks... that's at least a good start..

..it seems that the numbers for the L300 Express are very different to the Delica...
