Getting back to the question <g> ...
My EGT probe is mounted just past the turbo. I have 2.5" exhaust with a side exhaust that comes out behind the back wheel (side only to avoid my full width trailer hitch).
My temp normally shows in the 800-1000 while highway cruising on level ground. Can easily get to 1200 if highway cruising into headwind. Will climb to 1200-1300 going up hills. You can drop the temp by about 100 degrees just by easing up ever so slightly on the gas pedal -- more thinking about easing up than actually relaxing one's foot.
I wouldn't worry too much about cooking the turbo as long as you let it cool down before shutoff. I've set myself an arbitrary EGT temp of 500 or below before I shut the engine off. In normal city driving that is no time at all. After pulling off the highway, or a steep uphill climb, it can be up to 5 minutes of idling.
Mine seems to read higher than most people's by 100-200 degrees, but you should quickly get a feel for what your's does.

Re: EGT GAUGE
Thanks for the reply,
My EGT is probe is mounted as shown below. Thanks for all the input.I think that the numbers I am seeing are most likely fine, Hitting 1200F going up a Aprox 10% grade at 85K with 5 passangers and a full tank uf fuel now seems with everyones input "Normal".I thing to be safe any time it hits 1200F I will ease off the accelerator and let the temp drop.I will now watch the temp when I shut down as well,t allow the turbo to cool (Great Idea). It going to be interesting to see how the Exhaust mod makes a difference.
Thanks again and...
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Re: EGT GAUGE
Hi Folks;
I have some instrumentation systems lying around where I live so I will see if I can convert them to EGT use. What I will have to buy is a thermocouple. Have any of you wizards purchased a probe alone? or just in a kit?
So far I haven't found a better deal than around $40 for a 1000 deg C probe
I will be mounting it into a EGR blanking plate
thanx

Re: EGT GAUGE
Delicat posted a link to a company in BC that brings in from South Africa a really sweet engine monitoring unit from Madman. Can also be had as just EGT, but for the price I'd go with the full-blown system. I want one!!!! Just can't afford it right now.
Edit: stupid me, forgot to include the link: www.rovingrecovery.com/madman.htm

Ya, price is my bane as well.
I have a budget of $100 but am sure I can do it for less.
I'll post pix in my album once its done.

Re: EGT GAUGE
DeliTan, you might be able to do one of these for <$100 including a probe.

They sell on eBay as well. I don't have one of these and will probably go with the Madman in a few months long after the Christmas bills are done.

Re: EGT GAUGE
The EGT Gauge I recently installed was 60 bucks with probe off of E-bay,the crappy part is they stopped making the all blue gauges...I now want to purchase a boost gauge and am going to have a problem matching + I think wifey is on to me spending money on the deli mods might have to cool it for a bit.
Cheers.
