Might be picking up another Audi... Need tech help.

Post by audi4life20v »

Hey everyone Just wanted to ask a quick tech question.

As I havnt had a working car for close to two week Im at the point where im scratching my eyes out. Now, Im looking at buying a second 90 Quattro 20v even though parts are impossible to find ect ect. Its in pretty decent condition - the fact its been sitting for 3 years 0,0 fml.

The other option is would be a Coupe Quattro. (Basically same car but 2 door and rare) The only problem is, is that the guy blew the timing belt making mr pistion and mr valve say hello. Mr valve was overwhelmed by the experince....
So, its either A - buy another 90q20v that still needs tires, probably a water pump/ timing belt, and 3 years worth of OMFG its been sitting so I gotta fix it....
Or B - Buy a sweet Coupe that blew the head and has been sitting headless for a year.

THe real kicker is how I can fix both...
Both cars (and mine) share pretty much the same chassis, same motor, and same everything - brakes, wheels, body. So I could replace the head with mine.
But How hard is it to do a head in general? Is it just "lets throw in a new gasket, line up the timing marks to TDC bolt that shit down, new exhaust gasket and woahlah!

Thanks for any help,

Kyle.

Suggest this may be the wrong forum for asking questions about Audi's in general....

However, doing a head is pretty similar across the range, and the typical process is to take it off (if its not already), then give it to an appropriate machine shop to pressure and crack test (don't want to go putting work into it if its farqued) and if its okay then they will "face" the surface for you so that its all good and ready to go back on. If you don't do that, then it'll blow again. No if's, no buts.

When you're ready to put it back on, source yourself a factory head gasket and look up in a workshop manual as to what torque specs are required for that exact head type. Typically you'll need to crank down on each bolt individually in a pattern to certain torque specs, gradually getting tighter in a sequence, then loosening off slightly (on some donks). There's more to it of course, but that's the readers digest version.

Whoops, just re-read and saw that the vehicle had valve classh too - budget for a head rebuild on the current one or sourcing a new one, which will still have to be faced usually. Neither option is cheap, particularly not on an Audi.

If a car has been sitting for three years, you gotta ask a few questions - has it been under cover? If not, then are the cylinders full of water? This happened to a friend with a built engine and the cylinders were toast. Like you say, what else will be screwed after 3 years, including tyres? Alternator? Is there birds nests in the wiring, cos that would suck hard core. Of course, it may fire up first kick :)

I would suggest that now would be the time to buy yourself a $500 japanese daily driver to get you from A to B while you spend some quality time considering what you're going to be doing with the Audi's, and also spending the time to do it right the first time.

You are kidding, right ?

Take the money you would spend on a 2nd Audi and dump it into your current one or sells yours and buy somehing else.

Thanks for the info guys but the main point of this is yea the car that has sat for so long has fk'd tyres and has been uncovered which ruined the clear coat -,-

Now as far as "Just slapping on a new head" I am kinda serious. My current Audi has the EXACT same motor to a period, the only differnce being is on the coupe's they had a 5-1 exhaust manifold that looks and works pretty wonderfull compared to my 3-1 exhaust manifold.
So What I would be looking at is simply (kind of a lousy term XD) removing my head and replacing it on the other Audi that has only sat for 1 year in a garage.

He will include the head that has bent valves with the coupe so there would be a money pit if i did decide to rebuild a second motor.

Anyways thanks for the head replacement info. Looks like I'd only need a few gaskets and I can replace everything with my current car.

Don't forget that you'd still need to get the head from your current car faced prior to putting it on the other vehicle... and if you're serious about doing it yourself, invest in a torque wrench and a good workshop manual, or check out an Audi forum for the exact torque specs of your head.

Or just get a Delica. When things go wrong, we usually only have to throw $10 and $20 dollar bills at the bus to scare away the gremlins. With my Audi's, (Coupe GT, Coupe GT Quattro) The gremlins were much harder to chase, and usually wouldn't go away for anything less than a handfull of skillfully waved $100's or in the case of transmissions, thousands and thousands.
And before you ask yes, I got rid of them, and I was glad to have them running long enough to watch the taillights dissapear with a different driver inside.
