What kind of Diesel Lubricant are you using?

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

What kind of Diesel Lubricant are you using?

Post by Gyaku »

Just wondering what type of Diesel Lubricant would be best for my Deli?

I've looked at Kleen-Flo and a variety of other products.

I've even had someone tell me to add 2 stroke oil plus a diesel lubricant.

Thanks

David

FYI - Bio-diesel is not an option yet.....

We were using Howse, but changed to Standyne on the recommendation of a diesel mechanic. Just on the first tank with it, so not sure what the result will be, or if it's the tune up or additive that makes a difference, but seems to be running cleaner.

if Im running chemical lubricant i prefer the Raycor bottle , you can pick it up at Trotac Marine, I like the howes only if im going up to the north in the winter as I dont need the antijell otherwise, .
the Raycore bottle also has a nice little metering thingy on the side so i know i am putting in the proper amount and not just a glug they also have the biocide in the same type bottle

I just bought a huge jug of Kleen-Flo. I'll post if we can tell any difference at all. Preventative care really.

Hi!

Here is what I found here http://retail.petro-canada.ca/en/independent/2060.aspx:
Does Petro-Canada diesel fuel contain a lubricity additive?
All Petro-Canada diesel fuels have suitable lubricity - a diesel fuel property that lubricates moving parts in fuel pumps and fuel injectors to minimize wear and protect current fuel systems. Most of Petro-Canada's diesel fuels have good natural lubricity (even "ultra low sulphur" diesel fuels), especially during the spring, summer and early fall.

Lighter, low cloud point, winter diesel fuels contain a lubricity additive in keeping with the requirements of the National Standard of Canada for Automotive Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel Fuel. Petro-Canada recommends that customers avoid routinely adding additional lubricity additive to fuels as high dose rates of some lubricity additives have been found to cause problems such as sticking of plungers, metering valves or fuel injector racks.
What about other brand station? What do you think about it?

Thanks,

I personally think that no comapany will every admit that their product had damaging properties to anyones engines. but its funny that in japan the fuel has other lubricants in the fuel to compinsate for the low sulfer . but we dont have it here.

I have the 8th smart car imported here, I run extra lubricant , the mechanics at 3point recomend it.
and keep in mind our Delicas are running at least 15year old fuel systems, we can get them rebuilt, new seals , everything else. but in the end its still 15year old technology that was designed for sulfer lubricated fuel.

I put in the lubricant at my extra expence, but I have been driving diesels for all my driving life, and know many diesel mechanics . talk to people that repair diesels, ask a journeyman diesel mechanic about the condition of engines and injection pumps that have run lubricant vs ones that use straight pump fuel only..
then make up your own decision.
I dont put much stock in the public statements of major companys, after all

I'm still a little leery about additives of any form, I know most vehicle manufacturers specifically advise AGAINST any additives... it may be a good idea, but I'm just not sure I want to go against the people who actually design the engines... (Disclaimer, I don't have any information from Mitsubishi specifically, but I have noticed many manufacturers putting out warnings NOT to use diesel additives)

We've been using Standyne for about 3 tanks now, and have noticed a marked improvement in fuel economy, not to say it wasn't the adjustments and new belts that helped that, but we've gone from 39? km per tank to over 500 km a tank, that's pretty significant. Also, a friend who's a long distance trucker says they all use additive in the rigs, and we're talking mega thousands of driving mile a year, and they can't afford to be broken down, it's money in the bank.

there, that's my $0.04 (inflation you know)

That's the other reason I don't want to mess with it... I'm already over 500km/tank... in fact I'm more like 600km/tank...
I suspect it's the other adjustments more than the additives...

Do what you want with this info, and for the record, and I am adding a Kleenflo product intermittently, but I had a chat with a BC Ferries engineer recently and we talked about diesels and added lubricants etc, and he said that the ferries run on today's low sulpher fuel with no additives and he noted no issues that he could relate to the fuel i.e. no premature seal failure and so forth. I suspect the jury will be out (unlike the Conrad Black trial) for the duration on this one.

I know this could go on forever, but bc ferries here in vic doesnt use just regular low sulfer diesel, they use a blend, they buy recycled bunker oil , that is seperated, modified and then taken to them to use with their fuel, I know becuase I used to pick up the bunker oil from the cruise ships and other sources, take it to PWW where its treated. and then I would pick it up again and deliver it to bc ferries.

Here is a pretty interesting link related to research on Lubricity for various additives.
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showth ... p?t=177728
Seems 2 stroke oil is quite a reasonable alternative both for lubricity and cost.
Various other web resources indicate that it's not a good idea for vehicles with Catalytic converters and other emission controls - but for early 1990 deli's - should be fine.
I've been using Howes Diesel Treat which made for cleaner burning after first picking up by Deli in July, I noticed way less smoke. Says it's also good for anti gel / lubricity / and removing water from fuel (demulsifying???) - but recently started using 2 stroke - only about 4 oz per 50L fill. But the research showed they used 8 Oz for for the approx equivalent volume (16 Oz for 25 Gallons) in he research at the above link.

For me, i've noticed much smoother idling. I used to hear the rear seat and rear door vibrate dramatically and was becoming quite annoying. I'm on my second tank with only 4 oz per tank - and no dramatic vibrations other than the normal amount I believe reasonable from a diesel.

Anyway - maybe a placebo...maybe not - but I'm running with it!.

Also - read that we have 70L tanks - but mine gets to E around 50L - and I believe the Russik Manual says 56L??? Anyone have the final word on this? If only 56L - then I was about a Litre away from running out yesterday!!!!

Natural 2-stroke oil is mostly Castor bean oil. You can add it to any kind f engine (gas, diesel) with little possibility of sensor coat or seal damage.

Its not a question of whether or not to add lubricity to your truck. The truck was designed to run with it and now the fuel supply doesn't have it. So you have to add it or suffer the premature wear of many parts.

The older named marine style brand has been around forever. I have about 80 cans of the stuff from years ago. However now that I'm in Winterpig for the winter I switched to Napa with antigel.

That said, Castor bean oil smells really good when its burning..... :D
