Found something slower than my Delica!

My new Unimog 85 kph max speed. Just brought it in from Germany. It will replace the Delica as the family overland expedition vehicle.

Now your talking.... That's a real 4x4... Watch out for low flying planes. The reduction hubs on the axles are what reduces your top speed BUT they give incredible ground clearance and fantastic off road ability.. A bit of engine moding should get it to cruise at 100 kph. Cheers and enjoy..

Although a very capable machine, it's probably not so much where the Delica can't go as much as how la belle province will no longer allow him to go there in a RHD that isn't picking up garbage or delivering the mail...

Hi

To answer a couple of questions

Yes the mog will be fitted with a full camper. I am building the camper myself and the roof will lift up to give more headroom when parked.

I will be doing some serious overlanding through North and Central America much like the link of coaxial's friend in Europe. I have travelled around the world on a motorbike (5+ years) with my partner. We have kids now and I want to travel again. The Unimog is somewhat overkill in NA, but begins to make sense once you begin crossing borders or when the road gets really bad. I couldn't find anything like it in the Jap or American. There are numerous practical reasons that I won't even begin to list. After 4 months overlanding Mexico with the Delica we realized that it is just too darn small for a family of 4.

Getting the mog to go over 100 KPH is no easy feat. It would require either super fast axles, gigantic tires, or an overdrive. None of these options is less than several thousand dollars.

As for Quebec. I think the problem is for people who are now trying to bring RHDs into the province. Mine has been registered here for several years and nobody is the wiser. I think the future is uncertain for most all of us, no matter how "right" we feel we are/drive. The Unimog sure looks more like a garbage truck with the handling manners of one too! It will pull the Delica (sideways) without breaking stride, but at twice the fuel consumption the faster I get the veggie system going the better.

In Quebec I am supposed to get a heavy operators licence with air brake and manual transmission certification BUT if it is transformed into a "motorhome" I can use my normal driving licence (and the passenger can legally drink beer). I mention this should you ever get in the way of the bumper when my wife is at the wheel. You will be confronted with a damaged roofline, a battery of poor frenglish excuses, and a drunk. Nice rig!! BUT there is another option as far as speed goes. You could reach 100 km ,even 110 km with the ultimate in offroading and that would be THE PINZGAUER 6x6 or 4x4. Carry 10 and go wherever you want! But Mog is a good choice nevertheless!

True, one sees Pinzgauers in the Dakar nearly every year, but not too many 'Mogs.

To get the mog to my driveway was a relatively simple operation. Find Unimog on credible website. Send bank transfer. Arrange road transport from dealer to shipping port. Hamburg has a RORO shipping port which means vehicle can be driven on and off boat. Cross fingers and wait in Halifax for boat to arrive. Pay customs, put on temporary insurance and registration and drive home.
In fact it is the exact same process as bringing my Delica from Japan (with the exception that I had to drive the Delica across Canada to get it home).

As for the Pinzgauer-Unimog debate. Thats a great topic. I like the Pinz, I still have an old 4 Wheeler Magazine (1980) with an article on a Pinz factory camper.
I chose the Mog over the Pinz for a number of reasons, but mainly because 1)parts availability and the fact that they are still building them. 2) They have larger carrying capacity and offer a greater level of comfort.

There aren`t many people doing extensive overland journeys on Pinzgauers. I think the Land Rover forward control is more common for that niche market even though it is less capable off road.

The Mitsubishi Fuso double cab would have been another interesting option. People have been using these for awhile. I didn`t want to risk the RHD issues of paying that kind of money and not being able to use it in Canada

And yes the Unimog will be running on Veggie Power.
