Volkswagen's Delica: "Caravelle" & "California"

Post by mattias »

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to import a left-hand-drive vehicle from Germany? Do the same 15 year rules apply to European market cars?

Volkswagen's 4 cylinder TDI vans, the "New California" and "Caravelle" look extremely appealing (and extremely expensive!)

After being Delica-free for a few months now, my wife and I have a pipe dream to buy one of these in Germany, drive it around Europe, and ship it back to BC.

Yes the same 15yr rules apply so if you find a nice one go for it. Have a look at http://www.busman.be as an example of a well known EU VW exporter. They usually have a good selection of VW's and lots of rad Syncro videos that will get you pumped. :-)

Fifteen years is fifteen years.

I've kept an eye on some of the early '90s Europeans, like the gorgeous Fiat Coupe and the cute-as-hell Renault Twingo. I've seen the Fiat Coupe on this side of the Atlantic, but haven't heard of any Twingos here yet. My dream car may still be the Citroen CX (built from 1974 to 1991), and, yes, there are a handful in Canada. I saw a Citroen GS on the road the other day. Like just about every GS still on the road it needed new camshafts and lifters. :-(

There is a fellow in Vancouver who is bringing in Sycros from Germany... the guy who sells ShadyBoy Awnings knows a guy... at least that's what I remember. Might be an avenue to investigate.

Nice, Westie layout with modern materials, 17" wheels with a diff lock, and a 2L TDI - I want one!

$60,700 to $69,000 Canadian for a Californiya, might as well take it to that company, in Germany I think, that put's portal axles on em'; that way you could round off the costs to an even 100 G. You still couldn't drive it here, but it's would be just awesome (I've always be a van man).

Thanks for the replies everyone. If I'm understanding correctly, I would not be able to bring a 2010 model, even if it's LHD from Germany. That's a pretty big bummer.

Not unless you can special-order it from Volkswagen Canada, but I don't think the 'classic' van is available any more on this continent. Only the retarded Chevy-inspired abortions and the boring SUV-alikes. VW has really 5hit the bed lately with respect to it's lines.

FOLLOW-UP EDIT: and I see from VW's site they now have a truck, called the Amarok, which incidentally is Inuit for wolf. Interesting how a vehicle named by peoples of this continent, which will not be available in our market.

VW's main vans 'are' built based on Chrysler chassis etc.
I have no use for a caravan.

I do like the setup inside as options but at wow-what-a-price.

Nothing like my old westie I sold last year.

Just thought of something: if those vehicles are being sold in the States, you MAY be able to import one on the RIV. That way you could get a brand new vehicle without having to wait 15 years.

EDIT: check out this link (http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/SafeVehi ... SWAGEN.htm).
