Turbo or belt noise?

Post by Fosser »

I have a noise that sounds like a belt slipping above 2000 rpm it seems intermittent... I am relative new to my Delica with around 10k since I bought it last summer I have looked a fair way through the forums and don't seem to see a similar issue, anyone have a idea or suggestion?

I had same symptoms before on my power steering belt. turn the truck on, open up the hood, move the manual throttle(cable attached) so the rpms climb. watch the belts. you might see one acting like there is a strobe light on it(jumping) turn the truck off and tighten the belt.

if the belts look really loose and old(dry ,cracky), i'd think twice about putting my head directly above them as they might snap.

good luck.

Thanks for that, it looks like the alternator belts are a little jumpy... I was not able to make the noise just but running up the rpm so it must only be happening while under load

While poking my head around I also noticed some oil on the turbo, not sure of where its coming from but I took a picture, looks like it may have been dripping for a little while as there is a drip mark on the oil filter... odd that I have not noticed any oil on the ground

Any ideas on where this could be coming from?

not much help when it comes to the oil question...I'd just poke around a little harder to see if you can find where its coming from. make sure the filter hasn't come loose and possibly squirting some oil past the seal(not very likely).

cheers

As the turbo is oil cooled, it could be leaking from the turbo. Or it could be leaking from the valve gasket and dripping down that side. Look for oil at the back of the engine as well, and if there it would be a pretty good indication the valve gasket is the issue.

Typically the turbo will leak from the "O" ring (part of the turbo casing), according to the manual. Could be the gasket, as Mararmeisto has noted. Does the leak ever make it to the ground? Or does it evaporate before it gets there?

well I have spent most of the afternoon attempting to see where it could come from... there is nothing with oil on it above the turbo so my bet is if it is the turbo it is the 'O' ring but I can't see, there are a few drops around on the ground that were not there until quite recently so? the alternator belts seem a little loser than they could be so I will attempt to tighten them up tomorrow for a project and see if that fixes the noise. The oil leak... not sure what to do about that, I can't see the source and other than the bottom of the turbo, the drips on the side oil filter and part of the alternator there does not seem to be much oil at all leaking, may last oil change was 8000 km ago and the oil is not low at all so I am fairly unsure now how would I check the 'O' ring??

I had sqealing at and above 2000rpm. Turned out to be the bearing in my turbo. The turbo was replaced and since...no more squealing.

Hint: Look in the forum index under "Delica Canada Technical"/"FAQs And Downloads"/"L300 Delica Downloads".
