Glow plug relay?

My L400 doesn't complete it's glow cycle. It turns on, but turns off after a second. I had this happen on a Landcruiseer I had before, and it turned out I had faulty glow plugs, and after replacing them it was great. Anyone's best guess if this is the case again, or is it more likely a faulty glow plug relay?

I know that game all too well. I had the same issue and ended up replacing the glow plugs, the coolant temp sensor, the relay, the controller,and still couldn't remedy the situation. Wired in a push button for pre warming the plugs and life is less stressful now.

one thing to look for, on my L400 the glow plug light turns out after a second (once the vehicle is theoretically warm enough to start) however the plugs themselves stay on for 5-7 more seconds after that (listen for the click)

Do you hear a second click after 5-7 seconds ?

Check the bar and the leads as well after testing the plugs. They're usually corroded.

There are a number of topics already discussed in depth about your same question.

The ECU that controls the glowplug system can be rebuilt from the ground up into stock OEM format.

There is no need to change it's original board or modify it.

When the glow plug system is working properly as it should in stock form, there is no need to modify anything.

I have had mine in -35 celcius and if starts and runs just fine.

If it wouldn't work properly, I would have it repaired to it's original state without modifications.

Yes that is precisely what happens, the light goes out after a second, followed immediately by an audible click

Wouldent take you long to pull out your glow plugs and bench test them, takes about 2 seconds test on each one , once they are out, they go in and out like a spark plug, if they are original,I would replace them and then you don't have that nagging thought in the back of your head, When will they die, when will they die.....

immediately? or a few seconds later?
if it is immediately, then you likely have an issue with temperature sensor or glow plug controller, if it is a few seconds later, then it sounds like it is perfectly normal on the control side, and if you are having starting problems at that point I would check the plugs themselves, the bus-bar, and all connections.

quick question for people who have dug deeper in to the L400 glow system than I... where is the glow controller hidden on the L400?

under the left kick panel (by the passangers left foot) is the glow plug ecu. the relay is near the fuel filter on the left side of the firewall under the hood.

if immediately (even when cold) I would say you should check/repair/replace the control module as it is the most likely cause. next most likely item for this particular issue would be the temperature sensor.

Plugs themselves and the connections to them would be a different type of behaviour.
