Hitch in Calgary???

Post by piyeguyo »

Hi all

Just wondering if any of the Calgary (and area) people can recommend a place to buy a hitch. I went looking for one today and the only guy who was willing to make a custom-built one was charging me $450 + GST; this is without any electrical hook-ups, just the hitch... I think this is too much...

Any ideas?

Thx,

Fabio

The Mothership got a custom hitch at the Hitch Shop, 42nd Ave SW between Macleod and Blackfoot about 8 years ago. Their "stock" one wouldn't fit because of conflict with the "stock" exhaust, so they welded up a custom one. It is a Class III. I did the wiring myself. I can't remember the exact price but it wasn't much, and actually cheaper than the "stock" one, probably not more than a couple of hundred -- I needed it for a bike rack, so wasn't willing to spend too much. It is welded to the frame, not bolt-on.

I've attached a photo that might give you some idea, if the photo comes through!

Hope this helps.

Got it! It took me some time to find one person who would do the hitch for my Deli here in CowTown, but I finally found it. It cost me $375 and I think the guy did a pretty good job. No wiring though, and I'm guessing this is not very hard but for now I have no idea how to do this.

For the Delica owners in Calgary... the place I went is called "The Welding Shop" and the person I dealt with is called Bill, really nice guy.

I first tried "The Hitch Shop" but the guy had a terrible attitude and he was charging me $450, so I decided to keep looking and I eventually found this new place...

2" receiver, right now good enough for 4 bikes... later on I might think about pulling something, but not for now.

for wiring, I saw a kit at princess auto the other day for wiring a 1991 Mitsubishi Montero, I didn't pick it up, and as their stock is constantly changing I can't say if they still have it, but I would think there's a good chance it would do the trick...

otherwise most trailer type places (and probably even Canadian Tire) carry converters to run the flat 4 trailer connectors from vehicles with separate turn signals, (trailers in north america use a combined brake/signal bulb whereas the Delica uses 2 bulbs)

Thanks for the Tip! I went to the welding shop and am very pleased. The hitch is very sold, well made and fits perfectly. Cost was the same as above.

I have to agree about the Hitch Shop, I wasn't terribly impressed. They had to redo the hitch on the Mothership because they had it tilted down, so my bike rack would hit the sidewalk when backing into the driveway.

When I got my Delica, I wasn't sure what to do. But after piyeguyo got his at the Welding shop, I took my Delica there too. They did a fabulous job on mine. Mine was about $500 because I wanted some additional stuff, which required some serious bending. They bent the square tubing, rather than cutting and welding. Looks great.

No wiring harness, but I've only used it for bike rack, so no big deal. I haven't gotten around to doing the wiring.
