Black Smoke
i just bought a 93 Delica. it was running great, then i had a block heater installed. it wasn't put in properly and popped out on the drive home causing the coolant to be lost instantly and cracking the cylinder head. the mechanic showed me metal filings in the coolant when he discovered the crack. they replaced the cylinder head with a brand new one. then a lot of black smoke was being produced when id accelerate. A lot. so i took it back and they replaced all 4 fuel injectors and a new oil filter. so no black smoke for about an hour and now its back. i'm just wondering what the heck is going on and if it is all related. i've been lookin online to see what causes black smoke, improper air to fuel ratio, incorrect engine timing etc. i guess my question is should i be paying for all these fixes when it wasn't doing these things before they improperly installed the block heater.

Re: Black Smoke
As far as I am following you..... you had Company X install a block heater. They did it wrong causing the head to crack....
They owe you a new head and should restore your engine to it's former operation status. I think I would flip out if that happened to my baby. How long ago did this happen to you? What other circumstances are there involved? How far have you driven you wagon with the new block heater installed? Does Company X have insurance? Who have you been paying for "all these fixes"?

Re: Black Smoke
the new head was installed last week and the fuel injectors on thursday of this past week. i did pay for the injectors but i'm done paying now. i've only driven maybe 200kms since the new head and maybe 50kms with the new injectors. on monday i'm going to head back to the company and get a little more aggressive. i've been pretty laid back about everything so far. i don't really know to much about engines and how everything works so that's why i'm trying to find all the possible things that might be going on so i can understand what they are telling me and know if its BS!

Re: Black Smoke
Are you familiar with CVI in Richmond? They are very talented mechanics that really understand Delicas. In my experience with them they tend to tell you the truth right up front and are reasonable. I am not sure how you can get your money back from the other guys ~ it might just be the tuition cost of a lesson learned (
). However, in the meantime you need to get your vehicle up and running, shipshape & Bristol fashion, especially if you are taking her up north. You know... at this point your wagon may only need a little tweaking, you don't know....

Re: Black Smoke
The waste gate rod that controls the turbo may have been bent when the head was removed. I did the same when I removed mine. If you do a search you will find a very good post on how to adjust it.
I also had a sticky egr valve that was causing part of the issues.
