93 Jasper Starter

So my starter has been "unreliable" recently, arcing out and such. I tightened up the cable that runs from solenoid to starter and the problem went away :)

Now my van is parked at work and i cant get anything other then a click when I try to turn it over. Luckily I have the only delica within 300 km and it stands out. on the plus side ive never had so many remark on how early i get to work and all the over time i must be putting in!

So I'm looking for a new starter, I'm travelling from Northern alberta to Van round may 24. Questions is, do i need a special starter for the Jasper edition? I remember reading somewhere (but cant find it now) that the jasper has a different alternator and starter then the regular delica.

Any one got a starter kicking around? or know of a good place to pick one up?

With the arcing and sparking you described initially, sounds more like you may have killed the battery. Drag a charger out to it, give it a good cycle and then have a WalMart or Inter-something Battery Stop check it out. If you have two batteries (as I think the Jasper should), you'll have to check both and change both (if there is a problem). It sucks, but batteries have to be changed together because a dead/dying battery will always kill a good battery - a good battery will never 'heal' a dead one.

If batteries fine, only thing left is the starter (especially if you're hearing the 'click').

or poor connectivity along the way, to the starter, or the starter relay or the starter solenoid but I think that might be built into the starter :)

Try giving the starter a gentle, or not so gentle, tap with a stick or rod. Sometimes this can help. If that works, it should start up.

I've known guys who have had to do this sometimes when starting, but usually end up replacing the starter eventually...

If you initially disturbed the wire from the starter to solonoid and the problem went away it might be that wire.Investagate the wire It might be corroded internally.You can also try (carefully) jumping starter directly from battery with a jumper wire.If it starts no problem then it might be your solonoid or ignition switch if you get nothing it could be your starter.You mentioned that you only get only a click... if your battery's are good then I would suspect a wire connection.

In my experience with "tapping starters" if you tap it and it works then it usually means you have roughly six more "taps" before the solenoid is finished. My first instinct would be to take a wire brush and clean the battery terminals and cable ends before replacing the electrical system. Just the littlest coat of corrosion can compromise your starting performance. You may look at your terminals and they look fine but a little dark in places ~ that is enough of a barrier to impede your charge.
