Had a breakdown in Summerland on Saturday. Luckily we managed to roll unaided into a gas station. We started losing power on the uphills and so I thought I'd pull over at the next gas station and check it out. The engine died before I got into the gas station and when I stop we were steaming pretty good from the coolant reseviour. I let it cool for an hour or so and opened the rad cap. No fluid to be seen, so I filled it with some coolant. I wont start now though.
Searching through some posts it looks like the head may be cracked, and maybe more. I've come to the realization that, save some sort intervention from the Delica gods, this is not going to be a cheap or quick fix.
I'd love to hear what you think the problem may be and what the solution and it's ballpark cost may be.
Also, it's now with a mechanic who asked me, "So, whadda they call that thing?". And although he seems like a great guy and isn't the tech, I'm a little concerned.
Ideally I'd love to get it to Mardy or someone in the Lower Mainland. Anyone had experience with long distance towing? Is it ridiculously expensive? Is there another way to get it back to Richmond?
Or maybe there is a solid mech in Penticton or Kelowna?
I look forward to any help you can offer!
Patrick

Re: Breakdown in Summerland
I had to get towed from Golden to Butch in Vancouver and it cost me about $950. You are about half the distance so maybe half the cost??? I was able to haggle with the tower a little bit. Good luck. I am presently having issues in Edmonton and am having a really hard time finding someone who is even willing to look at it. Went with an older dodge/chrysler dealership since it is the same engine as a 1984 Dodge Ram R50.

If you have a friend with a truck you can rent an auto hauler from U-Haul for less than $ 100 for 24 hrs.
Re: Breakdown in Summerland
If someone knows of a long distance towing insurance for exactly this kind of situation, I'm interested in knowing about it.

Re: Breakdown in Summerland
Sounds very much like the engine is going need rebuilding or replacing as once they are severely overheated they loose all compression.
Try some of the Vancouver based towing company's as i know they sometimes have empty trucks coming back through to Vancouver and may do a deal just for some fuel money as they do not like empty loads.
I know Canuck towing some times do deals for this.
Its worth asking around.
Good luck
