Sounds like the 18th would be a good day. Can do a second one on one of the following weekends too for those who can't make the 18th. Would be great to get as many involved in one or two events as the days are getting cooler and shorter now.
What time would you be leaving the Calgary area on Saturday morning Erebus? We could make our way out there as a group, have picnic at some point and adventure in McLean park for a little Offroad 101. I will be in for the day... won't be overnighting myself... Wifey's trip was cancelled...

Re: September 2010 Calgary Deli-Meat?
At this point, I suggest the 18th (a Saturday) would be the day. We will leave Calgary in the AM (time & location to be determined) - would like to time it so Erebus can at least participate in the drive if possible as it sounds as though he may have a busy day (the more the merrier). Plan to bring a picnic so we can gather and talk Delica-talk and meet those we haven't already - will coordinate overnighting for those who wish with Erebus if possible. Destination if we travel with Erebus will be the Elbow Valley in Kananaskis. Alternatively, we can picnic on the Mesa Butte side (south side of McLean Park) and still be close to the Offroad Park for those who want to try their little shifters out. McLean is a dedicated land use area for off-roaders of all kinds... lots of trails, large variety of conditions from simple to just-plain-ugly.
Not knowing anyone's level of experience off-road, we can keep it relatively tame so everyone can participate and get a feel for off-road driving and have a lot of fun doing it. I will write up a more official blurb and post it.
Looking forward to it!

Shoot, won't be around on the weekend of the 18th, heading north for the weekend!
But I am still interested in scoping out some other Delis and meeting some of you in person, so I'll see you all at the next one!!

On the 18th I can leave whenever. I suggest we meet at 10:00, then convoy out to Maclean Creek to have fun and picnic. Later in the afternoon I'll head over to Paddy's Flats group camp (location to be confirmed) to meet the Bow-80 crowd and have dinner. (I'm checking to see if other Delicas can stay overnight, which should be a yes if you volunteer to help Sunday.)
Edit 9 Sept 22h05: It is River Cove, not Paddy's Flats, and other Delicas ARE invited to spend the night.
After dinner, I head up to the top of Moose Mountain. Before you ask, no one else is allowed to go with me past the upper parking lot's gate. I overnight on the top, and do radio for the Bow-80 on Sunday. The race starts at 0700, that's why I go up the night before.
Suggested Sat. meeting place: Coop grocery store on Richmond Road just east of Sarcee Trail SW. Coop is just east of the Cdn Tire.
If you have FRS radios, bring them. That way we can be in radio contact enroute, and especially handy while off-roading.
From Coop we go west on Hwy 8 (Glenmore Trail) to Hwy 22, south on 22 to Bragg Creek, then west on Hwy 66 to Maclean Creek.
25-26th September
The following weekend, my wife and I plan to go to Northfork campground (aka North Fork) on the 25th, stay overnight, then on Sunday drive down to High River to take in the free car show (over 500 antique, hotrod, muscle cars, etc.).
Anyone who wants to is welcome to join us. We can arrange a location to meet and convoy, or just join us in either place.

Re: September 2010 Calgary Deli-Meat?
Hey All!
Thanks for sorting that out Erebus!... am working overtime every day at the moment and only get to check up on here in the early morning before heading to the office. It will make the 18th much more enjoyable as it is a great way to take a break from the craziness.
I am in for that day and will be there at 10am.
In addition to radios, anyone who has recovery gear such as tow straps, farm jack, shovel, etc should bring it and, of course, a full tank of diesel. You never know when you might get stuck, even on easier roads. An ounce of prevention...
I hope to see as many Delicas as we can get... will be fun for all!
Cheers!
Ian

Re: September 2010 Calgary Deli-Meat?
Thanks for the reminder! I have highlift jack, spade, lots of tow straps. My jack and spade don't normally live on the Deli, but will be added for the event.jaggedfish wrote:In addition to radios, anyone who has recovery gear such as tow straps, farm jack, shovel, etc should bring it and, of course, a full tank of diesel. Sounds like a good plan for the 18th.
In your plan for heading out to McLean Creek for fun and picnic is it feasible for myself to come along with my HHR? I obviously can't do any offroading and trails in McLean Creek with the vehicle. Are you guys planning on hanging out together in the McLean Creek area where I can access with my HHR, chat and see the Delicas before you guys head offroad?

Yes, HHR, you are invited. The primary excuse for this meet is so you can see more than 1 Delica, so it would be silly for you not to come out.
I'm not sure how much off-roading I'll do myself, since I can't afford to break anything or I mess up the entire bike race on Sunday; but I imagine you can park your HHR and hitch a ride with someone for the 4x4ing part.

Re: September 2010 Calgary Deli-Meat?
Agreed! We can picnic somewhere near the main road thru McLean... perhaps the lake near the entrance or near one of the info kiosks in the park. The main road thru the park is basically just a gravel road, well maintained, no issues.Erebus wrote:Yes, HHR, you are invited. For what we will likely do in the 4x4ing part I would really call "backroading" as opposed to "offroading". Don't want to break anything either but these vans are pretty tough and going slow-and-steady is the way to navigate tricky terrain and the "Tread Lightly" principles are encouraged too. There are some relatively easy roads to take that offer optional challenging areas. It would be good to get as many people out and get them familiar with 4-wheel drive and the "feel" of sideslopes, climbing, desending, etc. I don't want people to not come out because they don't want to off-road - it's about everyone having fun.Erebus wrote:I'm not sure how much off-roading I'll do myself, since I can't afford to break anything or I mess up the entire bike race on Sunday; but I imagine you can park your HHR and hitch a ride with someone for the 4x4ing part.

Re: September 2010 Calgary Deli-Meat?
Awesome. I just wanted to make sure that you guys weren't planning on heading out to the area and immediately pulling off the highway onto some offroading trail.
I'll most certainly be there. I might have to bring the kid along in which case I wouldn't be able to do a ride along with anyone off road. If I'm solo I'd like to see what these could do offroad.
Hopefully the sun is shining and the weather is warm.

Re: September 2010 Calgary Deli-Meat?
Reminder... this weekend on Saturday the 18th... McLean Park, here we come! It's only Tuesday and it's already been a long week so I had to go out for a bit of retail therapy (man style)... so I bought a Fat Gecko camera mount for my video camera so I can mount it to my van for some interesting footage angles. Saturday is not gonna come fast enough...
Looking forward to a great day and hoping the weather holds off. How many of you are coming?

I'm there. The weather forecast isn't the greatest, so it will make the bike race interesting. Now all I need is the time to get my gear together for it.
In case people didn't see my edit of one of the early posts, you are welcome to camp out Saturday night at minimal (or free, not sure) cost.
