hi all
just replaced cam belt in my van and noticed that crank marks didnt align, so could be out. anyway started it and it ran smoother than before but chuffs some smoke - question is can I tweek the timing without removing belt? some vehicles have a pump that can be loosened and rotated
thanks

Darrin,
I've yet to have to do anything with my IP , but on my 1.9 TDiesel Jetta engine you did have to time the IP, which is done by measuring the deflection of the main internal IP shaft. That being said the correct timing of the IP is directly related to the cam & crank being timed. How far off are the timing marks? Does the engine run smoother while idling , and does it have power on excelleration. I rebuilt a Datsun 510 back in the early 80's. Flashed it up first time and it ran like a top. Got it out on the road and the darn thing wouldnt rev over 1200 rpm. Turned out I was 180 degrees off on the distributor timing.
I replaced the IP in my Ford 7.3 diesel. No timing belts, all solid metal gears from the IP down to the crankshaft. All the marks had to align, and the final tweek on the IP were factory marks. You loosened off the pump and adjusted for smoothness. But you were adjusting by tapping with the butt end of a screw driver.......thousands of an inch would change up everything.
I have yet to see the IP reading for timing posted anywhere, but I'll check my 2.5 Pajero engine section in a manual I have and see if its listed. One of the real mechanics may be able to chime in on what the deflection value range is if there is one, or is it an adjustment for smoothness. Don't forget the engine is an "interferance" type engine meaning the pistons could play kissy face with the valves if the timing is too far off.
I would bite the bullet and re-do the crank to cam to IP timing marks first, and see where that gets you.
Good luck
