12 volt lines behind console for gauges and other things

Post by Mr. Flibble »

Is there a guide or some photos out there (I have a few from the Oz site but they are not specific enough) to show where the 12v lines are behind the dash?

I ask because I am looking for a dash line to light my gauges and dials that I will be adding to my L400, and I would like to tie them into the same wire so that they come on and off with my dash lights.

Also, I will be adding in some 12v accessory plugs via a hidden cigarette lighter mount splitter. This way, I can have the accessory cables only poking out from a small point in the dash or floor and not have a rats nets of cables running everywhere.

Which lines behind the dash would you suggest are best for this?

Jay and I ended up tapping into the main ignition harness and splicing in a proper loom of all the usual stuff you need, and pushed that to a new accessory fuse box under the glove box. In turn, that glove box is on its own solenoid which is powered from the battery directly. Completely standalone. I can add new fused accessory circuits safely this way.

The truck is in the shop on stands and ready for overhaul. Electrical is first on my list; will post pictures/schematics once I have time to get in there.

When I put in my guages I took the power for the lights from my ashtray light- conveniant and already switched with the rest of my gauges and otherwise unused. I also took pwer from the cig lighter also unused.

If you pop off the center gauge cluster on the top of the dash, you can see the lines which feed +12 and Gnd for two green bulbs which rear-illuminate the gauges when the headlights come on.

If you are looking for 12V tied in with the headlight switch, I'd consider tapping into one of these. I used it for the backlighting for my Boost gauge.
