warning lamp meaning

Post by remko »

hey all, i have a 1994 l400 with the 4g64 engine. the bottom left hand side warning light keeps coming on and the engine sputters at low rpm, once the rev's get over 2000 its gets better. the manual i have lists the bottom left location as #6 and is unknown. anyone know what that one means? it looks like the pic below ( more or less) the brackets are actually squigly lines. any help would be appriciated.

doubtfull, it is definatley related to the poor engine performance. when give it gas the engine slowly gains rpm's around 3000 rpm the light will come on and stay on.

I was thinking possibly a fuel filter lamp? does such a thing exist?

That's a glow plug indicator.

It would be much better if the original poster could include a photo of the illuminated indicator.

Barring that, the original poster may want to take his van into a Dodge mechanic, since the same engine was found in the Caravans.

The light the O.P is saying thats coming on is the exhaust over heat light.
I imagine theres a misfire which is causing the light to come on when the running fault occurs but with out seeing the vehicle its going to be pure guess work.
What mileage is on the van? Has the tune up been checked?
I would recommend getting the van checked out by someone who knows about the vans and not a Dodge mechanic as they normally get confused by the fact the steering wheels in the wrong spot and end up charging a fortune and still not fixing the problem!

"Exhaust over-heat?" I can find lots of info about this as it relates to water-cooled-exhaust boat engines, but nothing for gasoline automotive engines? Is this like a pyro for gasoline engines? Was there ever anything similar on NAMPOS?

It was Japan domestic market only.It was installed on there gas engined vehicles as part of there emission laws.
There may be another term for it in Japanesse :-)
Normally the light comes on when the engine is started then goes off until theres a problem.
Most of the vehicles i have seen are normally disconected or the wiring broken so the light will never come on!!
The running fault is causeing the light to come on so when the faults fixed then the light should stay off.

The 4G56 is in a lot of north american vehicles.

You can easily source parts and any mechanic to go a diagnostic on it.

4G64 North American Applications

1990–1996 Mitsubishi Mighty Max
1994–2003 Mitsubishi Galant
1995–1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse
2000–2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse
2003 Mitsubishi Outlander
1990–1992 Dodge Ram 50
2001–2005 Chrysler Sebring/Dodge Stratus

There's a large thermocouple connected to the exhaust system that must be part of this warning light. The wiring to it looks fragile and may just need reconnected. It's easy to see and open to work on. Crawl under and have a look.

I own a 95 L400 gasser willl need a tuneup soon. Do you have a scope for engine analysis on the 4G64?

it turned out that some of the seals in the valve cover were worn out and oil was coming into contact with the spark plug wire causing a short, and occaisionaly to push the boot of the plug. I took it to a shop and had them replaced. since then the light only comes on at start up.

im in kelowna so i took it to a shop here, they do import insepections and had no problem working on it. i also had the timing belt and water pump changed recently so if anyone is looking for part #'s i have them on file.

thanks for all the help.
