Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Hi All 8-) My battery died and i would like some advice on what to get ?? lower mainland temps etc i just am not sure on cranking amps etc etc also i just have the single battery system.
Also has anybody had to change rear wheel bearings ?? mine are starting to make noise, advice would be so appreciated

Mario,

You need about 300 CCA to turn the engine over. The battery compartment is quite large for a single battery, so really any 500 CCA battery would be the cheapest way to go to get you back on the road.

If you want to make an investment in something decent, go with a single Odyssey. Loads of cranking amps, great warranty, long service life.

Or you can go with the ultimate setup. Wow, mine are pushing out 200CCA the vehicle is not very good starting, especially in the cold. Is it possible that this is the sole reason and my glow plugs my be fine. I initially thought they were a problem because I heard a clicking up near the dash but it is not the same clicking that the glow plugs make on start-up.

2 x 200CCA is enough, brand new, full charge. 1 x 200CCA is not an appropriate battery for this vehicle IMO.

Maybe this weekend I'll get Jay to put a ammeter on the circuit and see exactly what it pulls with the glow plug cycle and everything.

Mine are 19 years old and produce 200CCA together. So assuming they are both the same (my mechanic tested them) that would be 100CCA each! :shock:

Mr. Electrical did that already. As far as I remember it was 257 amps.

No wonder you have starting issues. Batteries in this age don't do their jobs anymore...

Actually my aim was to add some more sciencey content to the thread but okay now you made me work.

250ish amps is the pulse load of the starter. That load only lasts for less than a second. The load over the entire 10 second (ish) start procedure is in three stages before the alternator starts chipping in:

1- Accessory load + glow plug pre-heat
2- Accessory load + glow plug steady state
3- glow plug steady state + starter spike

On my vehicle the starter circuit is isolated and we can measure both loads independently... purely for academic reasons and to confirm assumptions...

CCA is a rating based on the number of amperes that can be removed from a battery over a 30 second period at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. So, technically, CCA doesn't really align with your needed starting amps. That's why Odyssey started listing PCA (pulse cranking amps) on their batteries.

I suppose that the desired rating of battery would have to be a function of what the pulse load looks like multiplied by the amount of time you want to be able to crank the starter (e.g. in a fault situation where you had to work the thing several times over), and the CCA would give you an idea of the low end performance of the battery in cold conditions which, ideally, would exceed your projected worse case scenario load by A Lot.
