Cigarette Lighter Removal?

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Cigarette Lighter Removal?

Post by Adam »

Do I have to remove the entire dash to get the cigarette lighter outlet out? I'm trying to remove the metal plate surrounding it so that I can install my WVO tank switch to the right of the outlet.
Image
I can squeeze my hands in barely through the ashtray space and down through the detached climate control area, but I can't seem to unscrew the outlet. Any suggestions? I really should be painting my fence, but seeing as part of the dash was already off for my CD Deck install I should take try to get some of the WVO parts installed. Well, maybe I'll go mow the lawn and wait for the answer to be uploaded. I'm sure its an easy one, but I'm too the point where something's going to get broken if I try to force it anymore.

Hey Adam, there is a pressed metal nut on the back of metal sleeve of the lighter. Unplug the two wire plugs first. It helps to find some small 'whee-niss' hands to do this (somebody else's term from here). If it's tight, I have used channel locks to get it loose. I find it's even more awkward to put it back to together!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tip Kevin. I'm trying to remove it with taking apart the whole dash, but it's tough just feeling the nut. Is this it?

Sorry about the quality of the picture, I had to stick my digital camera inside the dash and take the picture looking out to get a better idea of what's holding it on there. Wasn't able to loosen it with my hands, so I might pick up a small pair of channel locks from crappy tire to stick in there.

Cool though, that must be a small camera to fit in there. It's not the nut in the center of the red ring, but the outer brass ring, which unscrews, marked here by a thinner red circle.

I can grab it, I just can't twist it. Tried quickly to fit a pair of pliers in there to grip it but no joy so far. Gave up, went climbing and swimming in the river. I'll try again tomorrow when I should be processing satellite imagery :-)

Alright gave up on the removal and just drilled the toggle switch hole in place. It worked out just fine, should have done it this way weeks ago :-)

Now I just have to put the dash back on.
