fuel economy

The mileage I get out of my van is brutal. Its a L300 Exceed. I am getting about 550km per tank.
Is this what I should expect. A mechanic suggested that the pumps are dirty and that they need to be cleaned in order to get better mileage. Should I go ahead with this $500 ordeal or just suck it up.
Also does anyone know a mechanic in Pemberton or near by.

I getting 9.5L/100km 1989 5speed (Speedo is under reporting due to 31s).

I assume you are automatic (bigger fuel tank).

You need to actually calculate your mileage.

550km sounds good but my tank is way smaller (I have 400km/tank).

550 km's per tank is good or bad depending on how much fuel you put in.

Without knowing that, your assumption that you are getting poor fuel economy may be shortsighted.

With that said, average fuel economy for an L300 is 10-12L/100km

The tank is 75 liters but rarely would you put it more than 60L.

If you are filling up for 60-65 liters and getting 550km per tank then you're getting average.

Also depends on where you drive (highway/flat/hills/city....) and how you drive (conservative or peddle to the floor).

On the average 550km per tank is normal.

Driving between pemberton and whistler, you can get around 400-450km per tank.

Keep in mind the L300 is heavy, shaped like a brick and the motor is somewhat underpowered on hills.

For a 2-tonne, 4WD, brick-shaped bus, 550km is pretty good. I hope you didn't buy your van from some clown who told you it was going to get 25-30mpg!

Agree with jfarsang: if you're putting in less-than or about 60 litres per fill-up, and you're getting 550km out of a tank, you're doing pretty good.

hey I getting 25mpg (9.5L/100km) very happy with it! But with my little tank hardly ever get over 400km (mind you I like to keep the tank full in a diesel).

well, that's the downside of our 5spd. better milage, but shorter range. time to upgrade the Diesel tank :)

Mirror says not a clown (tho red nose...so must be xmas time )...but I definitely do get 25-30mpg (closer to 30) no problem.
But, then....
...it's a 5spd
...and I don't drive like a clown

...I speak in mpIg (miles per Imperial gallon) when need be.

Anyway, tired of this approx. 1/5th volume difference between US vs. Imp. gallons causing misunderstandings (9.5l/100km = 25 miles per US gallon)....so can we Puhleeese speaky metric only on this subject (so we only have to deal with the confusion of some referring to L/100kms and others to KMs/Litre ) ?

The Miss Lil' Bitchi gets 32.7 miles per gallon (Cdn) on the open highway and 24.17 typical miles per gallon (Cdn) in the city.
