Carpet - Front section

Post by mcod »

I want to replace the carpet from the front section to just past the engine hump. If you have it in good condition
I would love to find out what you want for it. Grey or black would be best.

I'm going to replace mine with rubber mat.

You could also just re-carpet with new material, something more durable than stock. While you are at it, clean up any rust in the floor and replace the carpet underlay with something that doesn't soak up water.

Any photos on the carpet replacement? I'm thinking of doing the same.
No matter what seams I reseal I can't escape the rainy day wet floor.

Have you talked to CVI about your leaks? There are actually a few mechanics that can fix that problem. CC Autos on the Island is another one.

The pop out window seals are notorious for leaking - I'll wager that most of the original ones leak and go unnoticed...
And if the wet floor is on the passenger side floor have a look-see for a loose rubber hose that can easily get pushed off with a foot.

I'm not sure why anyone would suggest you need a mechanic to seal a leak (unless you have more money to spare than time.)

Don't give up, and don't bother replacing the carpet until you fix it!

You should be able to trace the sources of the leaks, but you'll need to dry her out first. This is where a garage or underground parking lot comes in handy. At least, while the weather is relatively dry, turn on all the heaters and let her run for half an hour. Soak up all the water in the carpets with a shop vac. Do a good job of it. Might as well remove them while you are at it, give em a good shampooing instead of replacing them.

If you find the water following a path behind the inside panels, you can pull a few of those off easily enough. If you have a panel removal tool and a phillips screwdriver, its not very hard to do without any harm. Felix and I have all the panels off if you want to see what's involved. I think it took us 20 minutes to strip the rear of my van.

If you have a sunroof, find the channels where the water drains. Clear them with compressed air. That's a tip I got from Delicat.

Once you have dried that van out you can start to look for leaks. It might be easiest to close her up and hose her down. Running water over the seams is better than pressurized.

It only takes one small leak to cause a whole lot of bother, but once you find the source you'll be able to resolve the problem easily with a bit of clear silicone.

Firstly; I'm not just anyone.
Secondly; I'm not saying that Woodyacat needs a mechanic.
Thirdly; on a number of occasions I have dropped into CVI and they have the forward quarter panels off and are fixing this leak and do this from time to time.
Fourthly; I am presuming that because of the nature of the post in question ~ Woodyacat is looking for options other than DIY.

We're all laypersons here...

Posting on the forum suggests a desire for DIY solutions.

Falco's point about the front quarter panel is valid. You can pull that off with a couple of screws and behind it is a seam that tends to rust a bit. You can brush it down and put some rust sealant over it. 30 minute job.

Can post some photos or you can come by the workshop sometime if you like.

Either I'm a lay person or I think myself superior...... Hmm. That reminds me of when G.W. Bush said to Canada "You're either with us or against us" when we refused to invade a sovereign nation with him. What's with all the pointed words? How you see yourself is your business. Please don't call me common.

Let's get back on topic.

Sure. But I would propose that you strip the tone of self-importance from your posts, much like the damp and smelly carpet in the OP's van. Perhaps you can deodorize with a sprinkling of modesty. As colorful a tapestry of an individual you are, Falco, you remain our esteemed equal.

So how it works on this forum is that only certain people are allowed to have opinions, never to be disagreed with.

Then I have nothing further to contribute.

:o A lot of excitement over a little water. I did reseal the front quarter panel seams in October and thought all was well. I'll be clearing some space in the garage to dry out and suss it out.
