Manual hub fun

I've been noticing a bit of a noise when my manual hubs are locked.
Doesn't have to have the 4x4 engaged, just locked.
I have been underneath, cleaned out the snow, ice, gunk and such.
Just to make sure nothing was rubbing.
It was an interesting one which was uneven in sound.
kinda '...vvvvVVVVvvv..........vvvVVVVvvv.......' hehe thats funny
trying to imitate it. Very low sound, more a feel through the van.
I feel it because it seems to be underneath the driver.

Yesterday I was thinking that maybe my hubs should be greased up
again even though they haven't been in that long. Maybe something isn't
totally disengaging or something. FIgured it wouldn't be a bad then
regardless. So just on the right side I took them off. Greased it and then
put the first part on, then the second outter(with the dial locker thingee)
and had to pull it back off and it wouldn't come. Then the spring came off.
Panic Mode

Forced myself to sit down and have 6 beer. ;)
No, I didn't but should have. Anyway I figured worse case scenario I would
put my auto's back on if I couldn't get it back together.

I had a peek on the left side how the spring sat, then with an hour of
fiddling got it back together. Think I got it right, tested it and everything
was locking and unlocking good. Talk about a jawdropping moment. Heart
falls through the floor.

I haven't had the van up to speed on the highway yet to notice if the
noise is still there. Normal road speed in the city doesn't really produce
the sound, only above 80km. (And no, I don't use 4x4 on the highway unless
the roads are really crappy and such) But with the hubs locked and in
2wd, I don't want to feel the vibrations.

Went ice fishing today.
Hubs held up, noise was nothing other than normal differential noise.
Guess I fixed that.
Pushed through miles of 1/2 to 1 ft snow to our spot.
Too bad the fish weren't biting.
Small perch which went back to grow up a bit.

Have you changed your diff fluid lately?

The fluid was last changed hmm less than a year ago.
Can't hurt to drop it and put new stuff in.
I checked the level and it was up, and wasn't smelly (Thank goodness)

I'll pick up some new synth (same as before) and put it in.
It isn't making noise but might as well treat it to some new
Christmas Oil!

Just put new fluid in. Haven't had it up in speed yet but seems
good so far for the noise I was describing.
