Insurance in Calgary - Need Comprehensive

Post by foxycanuck »

So I've followed all the leads posted in previous insurance threads, but it seems Alberta is getting worse for this kind of stuff, as no one seems to give comprehensive on RHD.

I've tried TD Meloche Monnex, Johnson, Primmum, Blue Circle, State Farm, CRS Merrill, Lundgren and Young, and a Broker through Western Financial, and everyone either says no, period, or only liability, no fire, theft, or collision.

Has anyone had any recent success with this?

Hi Ryan,
Call Michael in Canmore at The Cooperators Insurance. Real nice guy, insures a few RHDs in Canmore/Banff - though you may need a recent safety inspection done.

He insures both my RHDs fully - if you don't want to deal in Canmore, I'm sure he might be able to connect you with someone in a Calgary office.

Thanks Steve,

Michael was super helpful and was happy to go with the comprehensive. I've got a quote through him and when we buy the van he'll transfer everything down to Okotoks for us.

Looks like you're well taken care of now, but here's some more info in case someone needs help with this.

I’ve been insured with Meloche Monnex for over 8 years, including full coverage on two L300s over the last 5 years, so I was surprised when I went to insure my L400 and was told that comprehensive and collision were no longer available for RHD. After calling them a few times and hearing a different excuse every time I called, I finally asked to speak to a manager. Because I already had full coverage on a Delica on my existing policy and a clean driving record over the 5 years of RHD driving, a senior agent approached the underwriter for me to request a relaxation of this new rule for me. I had to provide an inspection and appraisal, and I also included the UBC analysis debunking the ICBC ‘study’ and wrote a letter countering the arguments I had heard from the other agents. They finally agreed to give me full coverage, but warned that next RHD I want to insure with them, they probably won’t extend that kind of coverage again.

In my search for alternatives I came across two agents in Calgary that were able to find full coverage on RHDs. The requirement for an inspection and appraisal sounds like it is pretty much universal if it’s something that isn’t in their book. They were:

Sylvia at Rogers insurance

I have to second Jungle Jon's tip on Roger's... I dealt with Cassandra at Roger's... full coverage for my new L400 and was previously covered on my former L300 with them as well. Appraisal wasn't necessary for the newly purchased L400 as they just used the bill of sale... they did want one for my L300 as I had owned it for a few years.

An update to my experience with Meloche Monnex -
After offering me full coverage before Christmas, I got a call last week from them to let me know they decided to only insure me for the purchase price, not the appraised replacement price, a difference of about 3 grand.
Even better, my L300 that I've had insured with them for a few years is the same situation - insured for purchase price, not appraised price - but they never bothered to tell me before now.
Since they requested I provide them with an appraisal, I've asked that they reimburse me for that, since they are just ignoring it anyway after wasting my time and money. I'm still waiting for their response. Looks like I may be switching to Rogers in the future, after all.

Steve, thanks for the reference!

Just got off the phone with Michael and he is super nice

I currently only have basic liability so it will be good to have full coverage on my wagon

I just hope the price is reasonable....
