Stock muffler replacements?

Post by GISdood »

Spotted a hole in the underside of the muffler this morning when I started the Pajero (1993 2.8TD 4M40). It smokes for about 10-15 seconds when started up cold (forgot to plug it in last night). Spotted exhaust coming out from under the body in FRONT of the rear wheel and thought "Hmm... this can't be good!"

So has anyone replaced a muffler on their 2.8TD and if so, what did you replace it with and how has it worked out for you? Thanks in advance!

Yes, I've had Monty's muffler replaced. If you look for a Mitsubishi muffler, it will be a few hundred dollars (I think it was was like 5), so I chose a Walker instead. Much smaller, better thru-flow.

Thanks Paul,

I'll just hit up the usual muffler shops and see what I can find for a decent price. Cheers!

Power increase was minimal and mpg I didn't notice because I had changed the muffler shortly after purchasing the vehicle (no history).

For which after-market muffler to choose at the local muffler shop, just select a good diesel muffler. Only time you're going to get real increases would be if you up-sized all the pipe from the exhaust header back.

Bit the bullet and had a local shop take a look at the exhaust and make the repairs this weekend.

They wound up installing a Dynomax muffler and replacing the entire tailpipe as well, as it was pretty beat up had a few holes in it, also. Cruising on the highway is noticeably quieter now. There were a couple busted clamps and hangers, so the shop replaced all the hangers rear of the cat with rubber-mount hangers as well. Seems to have eliminated a lot of the rattling which I always just attributed to the diesel.

After starting it up this morning and going back inside the house, I actually had to open the front door to listen and check if it had stalled... big improvement!

I checked first at Fort George Alignment where I typically get any major maintenance done, but they referred to me to Harvey's on 20th or Centennial out in BCR. Harvey's was nice and quiet when I rolled in there Saturday afternoon, so I had them take care of it while I had a bite to eat at the sushi place just up the road.

Is your Pajero the other '93 in silver/blue? Its the only other one besides mine that I've seen so far.

The one by Tabor is the other I've seen around... if you see mine near a pub its typically College Heights, as I'm west of town, out in Beaverly.
