What year is it?

Post by konadog »

I saw this vintage bus one night in Adelaide - Anyone know what year it is? Mid-80's...? I'm told these were very popular at one time, but I'm not sure if they were sold new in Australia.
Manual hubs, 2 spares, slider windows and a little motor 8-) Ooo, and that classic colour scheme!
Lots of indigenous 2wd L-300 style Mitsubishi, Toyota and other cab-over buses down there - very popular. I saw a couple of JDM L-400's, one 4x4 L-300 beside the one in the pictures and one kei mini-bus. There may be others, but JDMS blend in. I didn't see a single left-hand drive and I was looking. A few 70's muscle cars - Ford Galaxys and the like, but they were all right-hand drive.

It's a second generation. Built from 1979 – 86

Not sure on this but possibly the 4WD Delica began production in '84.

I got this from the wiki so it must be true.

It states 1982 was the first year that it built a 4wd version.

Second generation (1979)Mitsubishi Delica
Manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors
Also called Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon
Mitsubishi L300
Mitsubishi Colt Solar (RI)[2]
Hyundai Porter
Mahindra Voyager (IN, 1997-2000)[3]
Production 1979–86
Length 3,990–4,015 mm (157.1–158.1 in)
Width 1,690 mm (66.5 in)

The Delica series was replaced in June 1979 by an all new design, bringing overall width up to the maximum 1,690 mm dictated by Japanese regulations for 'compact vehicles'.[4] The line-up was expanded to include ten model variations encompassing a wide variety of passenger, cargo and recreational applications. A four-wheel drive option was made available in 1982, a first in the Japanese van market. Engines were all four-cylinders well known from MMC's passenger cars and included the 1,439 cc, 80 PS (59 kW) Saturn 4G33. 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 liter petrol versions (1,597 cc 4G32 and 1,795 cc Sirius 4G62, 1,997 cc Sirius 4G63B) were also available.[5] A 2.3 liter diesel (4D55) appeared in 1982 and was replaced by the larger 4D56 (2.5) in 1986.

This generation is still in production in Indonesia as the 'Mitsubishi Colt Solar L300', equipped with the 2.5-litre 4D56 diesel engine. From 1997 to 2000, the car was sold by Mahindra & Mahindra in India as the 'Voyager', but priced too high it was taken out of production after only a little over two years. The Voyager did meet with some success as an ambulance, but this only further prevented prospective private purchasers.[3

So it's between 1982 when 4x4 became available and 1986 when the door windows got the drop line in the front corners. Never seen one up here. It's cool like a split-window VW bus...
I'm back on the Island now after after a heaps good trip to Adelaide. Looking forward to going back. In the meantime, Adelaide will be here in a few days :-)

It is definitely more angular in styling than the 3rd generation. It is appealing, but I think that the styling of the 3rd generation has an edge.
