STARTER MOTOR WON'T STOP !!! Any ideas?

Hello everyone,

First post. Been reading for awhile and really appreciate all your shared knowledge!

1992 Pajero 2.5L

Recently fried a starter motor and solenoid. -40 temp, no block heater...not. good. Picked up a block heater and installing.

Here's the issue;

- Now when I turn the key and turn it off starter keeps going! It doesn't seem to do it every key turn but most of the time.
- Starter and solenoid have been replaced twice so thats not the issue.
- starter relay has been replaced to its not that.
- batteries are good
- all cables and connectors have been checked and are fine

Seems like the relay sticks and then resets itself. I'm guessing something is keeping the power to relay going for a bit.

My best guess at this point is the ignition/key assembly. It was feeling a little stiff awhile ago but it would be awfully coincidental to have the ignition (mechanical issue) go at the same time as the starter (electrical issue).

Any ideas?

Looking forward to getting the Pajero back on the road.

When I turn the key on then off (vehicle is not firing quickly because glow plugs need changing) stater motor keeps running. I have to quickly disconnect the battery to stop it. I've metered the ignition switch and it seems to be fine.

Not sure where the voltage is coming from thats keeping the relay on.

I had a similar issue many years ago with a Ford Escort, it was the ignition switch that was the issue
