I was looking at my exhaust which is in really good shape yet but would like to try and get the EGT tamps down as i will be towing a trailer this summer and saw that there is a small (looks like a muffler) before the muffler what is the purpose of this? could it just be removed and a pipe put in its place? and replace the stock muffler with a cherry bomb turbo muffler.
Would this help with EGT and HP?

its not gona do to much for you if you take it off. Its main job is to bounce sound waves around to quite down the exhaust. It might flow a little less than a stright pipe but not much as its already pretty much stright through. It wont cost much to have it cut out $50-80, so give it a shoot. If it brings down your EGT then its worth the money
If not i could think of worse things to waist $80 on. Oh by the way, what kind of temp do you run at now?

My EGT temps around town would probably average 600 deg and going up the long hill by my house when pushing it the temp gets to 1200 deg sometimes

if your going to spend money on your exhaust you should just spend 250$ and put a 2.5 inch exhaust on it.

Easing off the accelerator, even just a bit, is enough to drop your EGTs down by a couple hundred degrees. As you drop in speed, downshift to get your revs back up and maintain a slightly lesser speed. By keeping the revs up, you turn your diesel engine into a big air fan which helps keep temps down. Of course, the real benefit of a pyro is for when you turn OFF the engine, because you want your EGTs to be down around 350-400 F instead of 1000 F. Cooler if you can wait that long, but then it's a matter of how much fuel you're burning compared to the benefit of another 50 degrees of cooling.
Changing out the exhaust will help the engine 'breathe' a bit better, but a turbo diesel does need a bit of back-pressure in order to direct the exhaust thru the turbo instead of blasting past and out the larger exhaust pipe.
North Americans tend to drive by the speedometer too much compared to driving by the capabilities of the engine. This is why NAMPOS have been built with bigger and bigger engines, with ever-increasingly larger fuel tanks to feed those engines. By backing off just a bit, your Pajero will do fine.
