slight smell of coolant?
Hi All,
Whenever I have the fan on, even the lowest setting and any setting, I get a sweet smell of coolant.
Is this a sign of something I should be aware of? The level in my coolant bottle remains constant.

sounds like the heater core is getting a small leak (tiny radiator in the truck that the fan blows through).
Another sign is defrost that frost the window since it is full of moisture.

Re: slight smell of coolant?
This is the begining of the end. The smell is correct. That is what I went through with my 89 pajero. The smell then the drip , the coolant level did not go down at first but over time is did very little at a time. Spent a day taking the dash out, and the heater core. When I looked at the core it turned of to be a one inch hose and a weak clamp. So I had it out so off to the rad shop get rebuilt and put back in.

Re: slight smell of coolant?
Thanks guys,
No moisture on window when defrosting on any setting, and yes, I do have heat.
The system seems to work fine all around, just the slight hint of coolant.

Re: slight smell of coolant?
Is the heater core under the dash? I was unable to find any diagrams?
and the important question, should I repair it or replace it?
Thanks.

If you have a mat over the passenger footwell carpet, check for dampness underneath

Re: slight smell of coolant?
I suspect it is just starting to get a leak or a bad hose. New or rebuilt both are equally fine.
Not sure where exactly it is on the L400 (I own the way sexier L300
)
Look under the hood and two hoses will go from the motor to the heater which is under the dash most likely on the passenger side of the truck.

Hope that helps.
