sheared off shock absorber...why?

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

sheared off shock absorber...why?

Post by nxski »

So I just had my shock absorber shear off on me while driving on the road. I have no idea what could have caused this!? Turning a corner perhaps or a wobble from side to side etc... Any ideas?

Thanks to Jay for assuring me that I was ok to drive home with it unattached.

On the plus side I have brand new procomp 9000 shocks and a 2" lift kit sitting at home so here's my reason to take it to CVI and have it installed :-D

Looks like it was just time to give.

Shocks have a short lifespan

I should have mentioned that according to the previous owner they were bought recently (therefor sometime within the last 3 years). What kind of a lifespan should I be expecting? My civics shocks laster 248,000km and 9 years before starting to leak. I assume these would be less because of the extra weight and off-road use!? That being said they've only gone off-road twice since new.

I have found that about 4 years is all i get out of a set before they go soft, that said i have had them last longer, but with the price of a shock being low and the peace of mind you get with having a new set its worth changing every 4 year or 96km :-) Your set looks like the rust might of got to the stud and made it a little weak :M

Usually it's 4 years or 80,000 km.
