Remember to wash behind ur ears...and inside ur intercooler!

Post by psilosin »

While installing my gauges the other day I also took off the intercooler to fiddle away at straightening some of the bent fins and clear out the bug guts etc between them. I also noticed that there was quite a bit of oil inside the intercooler thanks to the crankcase vent recirculation system so figured it was time for a bath. Gave the intercooler a nice warm bath in some engine degreaser for around an hour and then gave it a good rinse with the garden hose. Now it is nice and clean inside and out and all the fins are more or less factory straight again.

Do I notice a difference behind the wheel?...no...but I feel better with it nice and clean.

The waste water...aka Intercooler Sludge Soup. Black black blaaaaaaaaaaack. Dispose of properly in a salmon spawn creek site.

If you want a difference you should do the same job for the intake manifold and re-route the rocker cover vent through an oil catch can. I did not even bother returning it back to the turbo and everything is dry and clean now.

Yeah I tend to forget to take pictures of the things that are actually interesting...but I do get great shots of jugs of cleaner lol.

Not sure when I will have time to tackle the intake manifold but I do have a Mann ProVent 200 en route to keep the rest of the intake clean and tidy that hopefully will be here before the weekend. I usually just vent to atmosphere in these situations but with all that room to spare in the engine bay this time I thought I should do the right thing and keep it closed.
