Smoke Trail and loss of Power
Oh Dear...
My Van is suddenly bellowing thick black smoke and unable to achieve anything over 50km/hr.
happened over about 10km.
Deli is starting and idling correctly.
Browsing the forums, not seeing this issue exactly. Any ideas?
Turbocharger? It is definately not activating now.
Temp is good.
Injectors are recently (6 mo.) serviced.
Thanks for your consideration,

Re: Smoke Trail and loss of Power
Are you all the way up in Masset?
Could be something as simple as the air filter
or as bummer-ish as a crap turbo or misbehaved injector pump.
here is a decent diesel troubleshooting guide,
non-delica specific.
http://www.wilkinsondiesel.com/trouble.htm
There are some other good ones if you google around.
Check the the least traumatic/expensive ones first.
Definitely have a look at your belts to make sure
they are all in good shape.
Good Luck

Re: Smoke Trail and loss of Power
I second Luna-Sea, replace the air filter (nnooo you say, why would a $15 dollar part cause this problem .... listen and just do as we say).
Then if you really want to troubleshoot a bunch, re-read my posting http://www.delica.ca/forum/norther-onta ... 10478.html which gives tons of info, and things to consider.
Cheers, Christine.

Check that the actuator didnt break off your turbo, that happened to me. Its on the bottom of your turbo.

Re: Smoke Trail and loss of Power
Thanks for the tips,
I am indeed all the way up in Masset. A bit on my own up here for these kinds of problems.
I replaced the air filter less than a month ago, so I'm confident its not that.
belts are good.
I'm actually leaning more towards it being a cracked head, but I will start with the cheaper stuff first.
Thanks again

Not sold on head? If it is idling ok sounds like turbo problem or injector pump. Black smoke sounds like un-burnt fuel.
What symptoms make you think head?

Yeh, I'm leaning back towards Turbo...
Which I suppose is good as it's less expensive than the head.
Appreciate the feedback.

Re: Smoke Trail and loss of Power
Sounds like a turbo, as mentioned previously.
Have a check at your egr system if it isn't blanked off and it's stuck, the turbo won't spool up.
An easy check on the turbo is to remove the ducting between the turbo and engine and try to spin the turbo by hand, you'll know if it's seized right away.

Re: Smoke Trail and loss of Power
Don't drive it !
If it's the turbo and a piece breaks off and gets sucked into your engine via the intake you may possibly have much larger engine headaches.
For the time being, you can re route the piping from the airbox direct to the intake bypassing the turbo. This will prevent turbo bits from blowing up your engine.

Re: Smoke Trail and loss of Power
Oh crap,
100km later and it's all the same over again...
Blowing smoke, losing power, weeping gently while collapsed over the steering wheel.
My mechanic thinks the brand new turbo is faulty.
Any insight from this community is always appreciated.

Re: Smoke Trail and loss of Power
my guess is your egr has failed and its WIDE open dumping nasty exhaust into your intake and fouling up your fuel to air mixture , that causes low power, lots of black smoke and hard to get up to speed if its WIDE open, most vans have it fail only slightly open and completly carboned up, There is a Delica here in Victoria, Blue one and the whole back of the van is Thick black smoke covered nastyness.
, its a cheap and easy thing to remove , but I would get that turbo checked while its under warrantee....

Re: Smoke Trail and loss of Power
I have had two turbos crap the bed on me - one was an incorrect bearing size that caused the problem, the other, not so sure. Either way, I agree with the other posters re: turbo problem and if a mechanic agrees, you may have well found the problem.
Good luck
