poor starting

poor starting

Hi all having a hard time starting in the mornings these days.... I put in new glow plugs in jan and that fixed that problem.... but recently after i changed the oil to shell synthetic it doesnt want to start.... I turn it over and over and over and over.... put foot on throttle a wee bit then it fires a bit then barely chugs to life..... TONS of black grey smoke ... I'm thinking of sea foam this weekend as i need to change the fuel filter and thoughts would be grand..... :-D

Other than the ip seal could it be any thing else.... I'm guessing the glow plugs cause it's doing the same thing before I replaced these ones... plus with all the smoke I don't think fuel is an option....

pull the plugs, check the tips and check the voltage going to them.

If you have a stock busbar consider replacing it with a heavier duty one or run 10/12guage wire from the main lead to each glow plug

replace the filter for sure . good time to dump 1/2 can of seafoam into the new filter before you spin it on

Which glow plugs are you using now?
If you have a proper glow plug cycle and good fuel delivery, I would suspect faulty glow plugs.

I'm planning on doing that this weekend..... plus arent you supposed to fill the filter with sea foam the start up then let idle for a while ???

I'm using the proper 11v plugs not the hyundai ones they worked awesome up until the last month... not sure if the synthetic oil did anything.... I use 2 stroke oil often to keep it lubed especially if I'm driving long distances

don't idle

fill new filter with seafoam and install
dump rest into fuel tank
drive it on highway at 90-100km/hr for a good 10-15 mins

that will do it

Hi Steven, Do the simple stuff first:

Change the air filter (or at least remove the old one for the test), twice I have thought my engine was dying (shaking rattling and black smoke) but it was only the air filter which still looked ok to me.

Take off the in and out rubber fuel lines and pump some fuel thru by turning the ignition key on and off (use a rag to catch the fuel) as sometimes some crud in the line cant get thru the fuel pump (same symptoms). Maybe change the fuel filter (altho I would not bother right now as they seem to last forever).

But in your case, it is likely that the new oil may have solvent which loosened some crud, or partly clogged something. So think about that as the problem, rather than injectors which were fine recently.

There is also the Delitune tuneup offered by CVI. When my van first arrived it started poorly, was sluggish until it warmed up, and always had a fairly large hesitation while accelerating. The Delitune fixed all those issues. Mardy and those guys really know Delica's inside and out and they are very fair. They check out a lot of other things on your van while they do the tune (they noticed my tranny fluid was really old and changed it for me).

EDIT: just noticed you're in Calgary so it would be a bit of a drive for you to get to Richmond just for a tuneup. So hey, you'll just have to plan a good summer road trip to the left coast.

well fixed the problem.... installed new glow plugs ( NGK cy55) and wouldn't you know warm plugs and barely turned over and SHAZAM !!!!! it started up without even a puff of black holy the world is coming to an end and kill all the mozzys smoke :-D I figured the glow plugs were the problem and am happy now to be able to start the ole girl in the morning.

am probably going to come out that way this summer to either mountain bike or motorbike or climb or whatever I fancy..... so look out B.C.

Good to know faulty glow plugs are the cause for poor starting.
it is weird your last ones had lasted only 5 months. :M

yes the company i purchased them from waranteed them for 18 months and said they had tons of problems with those ones so i hope the new ngk ones will work for more than 5 months....
