Importing Delica few months prior to 15yrs, possible? ie. 19
Hi all,
Looking to buy a 1993 Delica and have it on the road in BC by mid to late 2008. Given the fact that they have to be 15yrs to the month, can l still import one now, get it all ready (compliance) and just wait for the manufacturing month to come for insuring and driving it?
I would most probably be dealing with Terra2 and the likes.
Thanks,
David

Re: Importing Delica few months prior to 15yrs, possible? ie. 93
I just read from Terra2 Imports the following:
(quote)
"Importing a vehicle to Canada before it's "legal" is illegal. All imports must be cleared by Canada customs and we have seen instances where vehicles have been prevented from leaving the docks. When this happens the owner is given a short amount of time to have the vehicle shipped back to Japan or crushed by the Canadian government."
So I'm comfused if I'm alloyed or not to import a '93 a few months before it reaches the 15yrs mark. T2 Imports suggest in that case to have it stored in Japan until the time alloys it. Can I simply store it at my place and insure it once it's legal?
Thanks.

No. If it isn't 15 years old, it doesn't get off the boat. Period. Canada Customs tend to be sticklers about this.delicat wrote:I just read from Terra2 Imports the following:

If you're really that desperate you should seek competent legal advice, which this forum is not. Or save yourself the hassle and store in in Japan. Probably cheaper than talking to a lawyer anyway.

Hi, Laura is right,
pls dont even try to ship it here even its less than 1 month for 15 yrs olds, custom is very strict now. you need to show proof & the only proof we got it the registration. if not your be stuck & will cost you big buck & hassle.
as for let your delica storage in japan i cannot say anything, its your call. we never know when they will change the rules. try as much possible not to do storage cause it might cost more money later or later maybe they will take out some parts from your delica before you can ship it here all will be gone & nothing you can do about it. so just beware.
Cheers,
Mardy

Any reason you are so attached to getting a '93? why not just a '92?

Re: Importing Delica few months prior to 15yrs, possible? ie. 19
Thanks to all the replies, very helpful.
The reason I wanted a '93 is simply that I won't need to have it on the road until mid-late 2008. (I want to have the import/compliance all done a month or two before having my second child). With that in mind l thought l could probably get a better selection and price as the demand from Canada hasn't started yet on the '93 and l'm in a position that although l don't need it now l could still buy it now...
But since unloading it here before 15yrs mark is impossible and storing it in Japan isn't recommended l'll simply wait a little longer.
Thanks again,
David

Hi, Yes pre buying can be great, i do it all the time, i have half a dozen vans in Japan right now waiting for 08 to roll around and my keeper van cant touch Canada until last week so it will be here in two weeks, If you bring it here , customs will seize it, No they dont crush them, thats a rumor.
I know because i have bought several of them that have been seized from customs, I have to ship them back to japan, OR any other country that takes imports that are with in that vehicles year alowance. YOU can pre buy and store it in japan , but storage can be a problem, Im fortunate to have a few acres of storage there, I have some 93 Delicas waiting for the dates, and one supra for my brother

I heard from one of the broker's that there have been instances where some vehicles have slipped through with "fudged" dates in the documentation. Apparently once customs allowed a vehicle's date to be "corrected" with paperwork resubmited from Japan. Not sure if it is true and sounds like a dangerous gamble withal, but just passing along what I've heard n the subject FYI.
I've had a Deli sitting in Japan since July. It is date stamped Dec 92. Sounds like they should ship it around Nov 15th then?
PS: Just got word from my Japan exporter that there has just been a decision made on the 15 year rule. Apparently it is to stay as it is for now. I cannot seem to find anything further about it however.

no decision has been made either way, well not officially yet, but yes it looks like they will leave the 15year rule as it stands, DO NOT send your van here even a day early , mine could enter Canada oct 1st and i made sure it dident arrive until over a week later. shipping takes 13 days, plan for that and you will be safe and have no problems.
I would Never gamble with bringing in a van early and expecting that they will massage the dates for you, well maybe some have, but ive never heard of anyone actually doing that. only "can you imagine if" same game as what i would do with the wining 649 ticket.....
if we could import early I would have a yard FULL of delicas and a few supras for my brother.
I actually just booked my trip over to Japan to hand pick some more vans and set up some wholesale accounts for parts. yuppers, things are sure hapening fast... but a palm tree christmas will be a nice way to relax a bit, ( no, no palm trees in Japan, but in my stop over there sure is lol)

Im with Mardy.
Sure you can pre buy all you want, but what happens if the import rule changes. Totally up to the individual but I would say that caution would be prudent.
Sid.

any time you buy from overseas its a gamble, as everything has to be pre-paid, if they change the rule tomorrow, there is hundreds of thousands of dollars lost.
It all comes down to if you want to be in this buisness then thats the risk, like anything.
but I would Never gamble with bringing in vehicle befor they are legally able to be brought into the country

Of all people here I shouldn't have to correct YOU on this one!the decision has been made by TC and the 15 year rule is staying the way it is for now. we have the email on file to back this claim up.
The decision has NOT been made! and we MUST keep fighting for what is right. The ONLY thing that will win this is constant vigilance on our part.
What Transport Canada HAS said is that right now they don't have enough evidence to change anything, HOWEVER they have also indicated via their website that they believe RHD to be dangerous, and want them off the road, this indicates that they will most likely be trying again, and probably soon. Do NOT be lulled in to a false sense of security by the statements they have made so far, they have proved in the past that they can not be trusted on this sort of thing.

don't take what i said as a statement of finality. the statement was the 15 year rule will stay the way it is ....
i should have added that TC can still change it's mind at any time and yes we need to stay awake and monitor the Gazzett for any posting of a stakeholders meeting. this will prevent them from trying to sneak the change through.
at no time did i say we can relax.
thanks for reiterating the importance of being viligant..
