Furthest North?

Just curious which delica owner lives the furthest north. I am moving to Smithers on New Years day... anyone further north than that?

By the way, does anyone know anyone in smithers?

I think I am currently the Northernmost Deli owner in BC - Williams Lake. I have seen a few Prados, Cruiser VX's, and a Skyline in town, but no other vans outside of the Lwer Mainland - although mine constantly gets looks, I get tailed, flagged down, etc. I was even followed to friends house and they rang the bell to talk to me. There should be a few more up here soon.

I used to live in Houston, not far from Smithers but I drove Land Rovers and diesel Mazda's and a Landcruiser then. Still very common cars :lol: :lol: :lol:

I know several people up north and return there at least 2 times a year for the finest fishing in the world - bar none!!!!!

I'll be back from Alberta by December 29, so call when you pass through.

James, this is sort of on topic becuase of how far north I am moving. I am curious if you ever get that block heater installed? If so, what was the brand and specs... I want to install one this saturday.

Also PM me your number so I can give you a ring when we drive through... probably on the 1st of January.

I've now moved the Frappr map so that this appears at the bottom of every page. Please let me know if this change causes any difficulty with the functionality of this board (e.g., if this slows down the site, etc.).

Looks like there are a few more northern Delicas... just curious on how they are running in the cold. There looks to be someone that is way up north in Manitoba... that would be a true test of cold weather capabilities.

Any northerners care to comment? What type of block heaters? Starting rituals? I know Docsavage has quite a detailed "Delica starting ordeal"... anyone else?

I just don't bother starting it when it dips below -20.

the way i do to most delica diesel is put the lower radiator hose heater, plug it by 8 hrs to 4 hrs on -20 then you dont have any problem to start. as long as you have a proper mix of antifreeze. i usually mix is in the max. 70% antifeezed & 30% water. you try & wont have any problem firing up this delica turbo diesel. hope this will help. thanks:

well I may not be "far north" but our forecast this week in Calgary gets as low as -25 on thursday, (-15 to -20 the rest of the week) and I haven't had time yet to do anything about a heater of any form... so we shall see if I can get it going at all... and if not... I guess I'll be off to get a magnetic oil pan heater until I can do something better...

My magnetic oil pan heater helps only when it is milder than -20

i got the stick on type available at canadian tire. started at -28. I also got new batteries as the old ones were not cranking it enough at all. Its still rough when it starts but it does start.

as you know there is a coolant temperature sensor attached on top of the cylinder head, rigt in front of the glow plug with rubber cover on it. this is connected to the glow plug system & thru the ecu then feed the glow plug to run the system.usally you should heared 2 click in the back driverside under your seat. you open it then you see 4 relay in there. the 2 big cone one is the one for glow plug. each one got the cutoff of 6.2 volt other is the booster to 12V for few second . then when it fired it sence it. then glow plug relay automatically shot off. thats how s it work.
pls dont try to boost the battery of this delica to other car as much as possible it may destroy your glow system . its very sensitive, usaually glow plug & relay got burn , No click & you cannot start the car. you need to change the glow plug & relay which is common problem for this delica.
so just beware about this thing. you look after this kind of this then you wont have any problem for long time. but you make mistake about this glow system its a big headache very hard to fix.
usually when the coolant is warm the sensor sense it & its easy to start for the glow plug. in short they are both connected to each other. so try to get the esso Heavy duty diesel antifreezed . they used this for big truck. mix it to the max. dont used the prestone since its not for diesel.price is the same , so get the proper diesel antifreezed. hope this will help evrybody out there who like to maintaine this delica wihtout any problem.

well... we seem to have missed the -20 so far... but we did have -15 today, and it fired up without too much difficulty... ok, it wasn't happy, but it fired, and with plenty of battery power left to keep trying if I had to...

question... does doing something with the choke help/hinder at all?

hi, there yes, it help you to maintain the throttle control of your engine, just somehow this mitsubishi diesel delica seems dont like cold weather. we have people who own a pajero V44 in Edmonton same engine as delica that has the same problem. so i suggest to them to put the lower rad heater & used diesel antifreezed & max it to 70-30 mix. they plug it at least 7 or 6 hrs steady even below -20 , then it fired up without any shake on the engine. it seems the design of ecu towards the glow plug system kind off shooting the system when it reach that piont -10 to start. other than that no problem at all to start. unless you only put 50/50 coolant on it. so many factor to make it works better in a cold weather as for my experience. so i guess try to do this little thing & for sure you wont have any problem to start. this engine wants to have warm coolant to start easy. just normal prevention towards the glow system of this delica.
