Importing privately

I haven't bought a Deli.........yet, but today Ruminante let me take his for a drive and I think I'm hooked.

I'm toying with the idea of working with an exporter myself to save some $$ as I'm happy to do the required changes to the vehicle when it arrives myself. Has anyone else privately imported a Deli? Can anyone reccomend an exporter to work with? Any other hints or tips would be appreciated.

I'm in the midst of bringing in a Delica, so I may only have a portion of the advice you're looking for... I used autosquare as an auction broker, but they also sell vehicles. So far, so good, but I'm learning that much of the costs of a delica are from transportation and importing - perhaps up to 50%.

At some point in the next month or so, I will post a step-by-step of my experiences privately importing a Delica. The import process is not complicated and does not take a lot of time or skill to do. This was my FIRST time importing, and I would definitely do some things a little differently. I'll point out all those things at the time. I certainly don't think I would have paid $500 to someone just to handle the paperwork, and I work 12-14 hour days.

I would surly not pay $ 500 hundred for the paper work either, a broker can do that for $ 250 (Canadian-based Courtney Agencies Ltd).

The cost that I charge is related to service over and above that of the paper work. Some of the things that I offer help with is:

I arrange for inspection of your car at the auction.
You can bid on any vehicle with out the upfront payment that is required.
Further you are able to talk to the agents in Japan and ask all the questions that you have.

There is a bit more peace of mind when you can have some one that you can trust rather then just sending of your money to a bank account in Japan. Providing that you feel that you are getting service from me that you feel comfortable with.

Realistically the process of buying a Delica, shipping it here and getting it ready is not that complicated. But that is all relative to your experience. My goal is to offer transparent advice to any one that I can, and if I cannot then I refer to this forum for further help. The community that is building around this forum is very positive, dynamic and small. All of us depend on it to reflect who is practicing good business.

Don't take this the wrong way. The only reason it is easy to import a car is forums like this. If you had of been the pioneer of this process without the advice of others then it was much more difficult. Like sourcing parts and barely any garages would touch JDMs and if they did they gouged ya some major coin. I paid somebody to remove an injection pump, 4 hours labour that I know now takes under an hour. It doesn't change the fact that it is easier now but I think people should remember it wasn't always a cake walk. I also would like to thank the members and JDM community for being creative, dilligent and rising to the challenges placed in front of us by our governments. The key is sharing info.

Daniel helped me import two vehicles, he also had another client purchasing a Canter 4WD so we were able to share a container and get cheaper shipping. (40ft is only about 50% more than a 20ft). His agent in Japan worked hard and found me an outstanding Isuzu Elf with a crane just like I wanted for a good price...having someone who has done the import process eliminates the need for a customs broker too.

Not unless they are also Federally Registered Brokers. You can do it yourself if you are the owner of the vehicle, but, like climbing Mt. Fuji, show me a man who has climbed it once, and he may be a wise man, show me a man who has climbed it twice, and I'll show you a fool. It would be very inconvenient to tackle the B3 Customs Form on your own, even if you are someone 'who has done the import process'.

I tip my hat to Daniel for helping me import my Delica.

I struggled at first, but finally found the Delica I wanted. But, hmmmm..... How to import it? How to deal with all the paper work? The Customs issues? Compliance? Where do I get it inspected? Too many questions.... and now that I'd finally found my Delica I needed answers. Daniel was not only able to help answer these basic questions, but also was willing to share a wealth of Delica knowledge and tips that he had learned through trial and error himself. When my Delica finally came in to port, he saw me through getting it cleared, brokerage and all. And then, to top it off, he helped out with doing all the compliance work.... and from what I'm able to gather, I saved a bundle. (oh, and it just passed compliance with flying colours. -Thanks Daniel)

Daniel was courteous, reliable, quick to respond to my crazy questions, very understanding of my availability, and in fact was able to help me out in a moments notice. He seems to me to be a VERY positive, and driven guy, with a lot of respect for Delica's, as well as the people who love them.

The one thing I'm sure of is that if I hadn't "gone it alone" (sought out my own Japanese Dealer, and bought my Delica myself from them), then I would have trusted Daniel in finding the vehicle I wanted for the price I wanted, importing it and basically clearing all the paperwork as well!

As you may have already read, he's now helped a few members get their Delica's (or even other vehicles) of their dreams, I'm now one of them, and I'm happy to have had his help! -He's certainly earning the name, "Daniel the Delica-holic"!
